What the minor works certificate covers

A Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC) certifies an addition or alteration to an existing circuit that does not extend to a new circuit: for example adding a socket, a light or a spur. It records the work done, the parts of the installation tested, the results and the declaration that the work complies with BS 7671. It is the lightweight counterpart to the full EIC.

Who needs one

  • Electricians adding to or altering an existing circuit: an extra socket, spur, light or fused connection unit
  • Small remedial jobs that don't warrant a full Electrical Installation Certificate
  • Giving a homeowner or landlord proof the alteration was tested and complies
  • Any job where a new circuit is not being installed
