Rotary Isolator Selection Guide for Electricians

A brand-neutral pre-order checklist for selecting an installable rotary isolator: rating, duty, enclosure, cable entry, terminals, space and substitution control.

Select for the Actual Isolation Duty

A rotary handle and a current number do not prove that a device is suitable. Start with the system and duty: AC or DC, voltage, current, phases and poles, nature of the load, required making or breaking capability, isolation function and any lock-off or emergency-switching need. Then use the current product standard, manufacturer data and project design to select the device.

Do not assume an AC rating carries across to DC, or that two products with the same headline amp rating have the same utilisation category or switching capability. The IET’s guidance on PV DC switch-disconnectors is a useful illustration: the manufacturer’s voltage, current and configuration data must be applied to the actual system.

This article is an ordering and installability checklist for competent electricians. It is not a generic design calculation or instruction for working on live equipment.

Check the Enclosure After Entries, Not Just on the Box

An enclosure rating applies to a defined product arrangement. Cable entries, glands, seals, blanks, mounting surface and operating conditions can determine whether that protection is maintained in the finished installation.

  • Match the enclosure and materials to the actual external influences.
  • Check permitted entry positions and the flat area available for the chosen glands.
  • Allow for condensation, drainage or UV exposure only as the manufacturer permits.
  • Confirm the handle, cover and locking arrangement remain usable after mounting.

“Outdoor isolator” is not a complete specification. Record the environment and product reference in the quote or job notes so a later substitution can be checked against the same requirement.

Prove the Cable, Gland and Terminal Combination Fits

Many ordering mistakes happen after the electrical rating has been chosen. Before purchase, compare the proposed cable and gland arrangement with the manufacturer’s enclosure drawing and terminal data.

  • Is there enough gland area and clearance for the cable diameter and bend?
  • Are the terminal type and stated conductor range suitable for the conductor material and preparation?
  • Can the cores reach their terminals without strain, severe bends or obstructing the mechanism?
  • Is there room to use the specified tool and apply the manufacturer’s terminal torque?
  • Will earth continuity, screens or armour be terminated using an arrangement intended for the enclosure?

A datasheet thumbnail is rarely enough. Use the full current datasheet and installation instructions for the exact catalogue number, including any accessory or enclosure variant.

Leave Space to Isolate, Lock Off, Inspect and Maintain

Installability includes the person who will operate and maintain the device. Check the handle can move through its full travel, labels are visible, a lock can be fitted where the safe system of work requires it, the cover can be removed and terminals can be inspected without dismantling unrelated equipment.

HSE guidance on electrical work emphasises making equipment dead, preventing inadvertent reconnection and proving dead before work. Device selection should support the site’s safe-isolation procedure; owning a rotary isolator does not by itself create one.

Where access, safe working space or the isolating arrangement is unclear, resolve it at design and survey stage. A smaller enclosure that technically fits on the wall can still be the wrong operational choice.

Treat Every Substitution as a Design Check

“Equivalent” should mean the substitute satisfies the same verified requirements, not simply that it has the same current marked on its front. Re-check the duty and ratings, poles and utilisation, standards, enclosure and environmental suitability, terminal range, entry geometry, accessories, locking arrangement and manufacturer installation conditions.

Record the exact approved product reference before installation. If a merchant substitution changes the specification or install time, update the customer and agree the commercial variation where needed.

  1. Write down the system, isolation function and switching duty.
  2. Select from current manufacturer data for the exact catalogue number.
  3. Check enclosure suitability in the completed arrangement.
  4. Overlay the real cable, gland, terminal and bend-space needs.
  5. Confirm operation, lock-off, labelling, inspection and maintenance access.
  6. Save the product reference and supporting data with the job; re-check any substitute.

That small discipline is more useful than a “best isolator” brand list. It turns a generic component order into a selection that can actually be installed, operated and maintained in the intended location.

What information is needed before ordering a rotary isolator?

Confirm the system and switching duty, ratings, phases and poles, required isolation and lock-off functions, environment, enclosure and entry arrangement, cable and conductor details, terminal data, installation space and maintenance access. Check all of it against current manufacturer data for the exact product.

Can an AC rotary isolator be used on DC?

Only where the exact device is manufacturer-rated and configured for the actual DC voltage, current and duty. Do not transfer an AC rating to DC by assumption; DC switching can require different ratings, contact arrangements and utilisation categories.

Is another isolator with the same amp rating an equivalent substitute?

Not necessarily. The substitute must be checked against the full requirement, including switching duty, product standard, poles, enclosure, terminal range, cable-entry geometry, accessories, locking and installation instructions, not just the headline current rating.
