Compare the Whole Apprenticeship Offer
An apprenticeship combines a paid job with learning and assessment. The useful question is whether the employer's work will provide the experience required by the named qualification, including its chosen specialism. A course place without a workplace plan is a different offer.
In England, Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician ST0303 version 1.2 is the approved standard checked on 2 October 2026. It shows a typical 48-month duration and a separate six-month assessment period. The agreed programme can depend on assessed prior learning and circumstances; ask for the actual training plan rather than a guaranteed completion date.
Which Heating Option Can the Employer Support?
The England standard separates domestic gas, domestic air-source heat pump/solar thermal and non-domestic plumbing options. Ask which option the employer offers and how its day-to-day jobs provide the required evidence.
Fictional vacancy comparison: Casey sees one vacancy with a domestic heating contractor and another with a non-domestic plumbing contractor. Casey asks each to name the specialism, assessor and types of supervised work. A similar job title does not mean the two programmes lead to the same work scope.
If the option includes gas, ask which recognised gas competence evidence is awarded and how the business will arrange the engineer's registration and relevant categories. Completing the apprenticeship does not itself create Gas Safe registration.

For England eligibility and vacancies, start with GOV.UK and Find an apprenticeship. The employer/provider sets its entry requirements. School grades listed as typical in careers guidance are not a universal legal licence requirement.
Adults, College Learners and the Other UK Nations
An adult can pursue an apprenticeship; the provider assesses relevant prior learning rather than assuming another career shortens the route. A college course can help you find a training job, but ask what workplace qualification/assessment remains.
Scotland's employer-led Modern Apprenticeship uses its own SVQ/SCQF route, described by SNIPEF. For Wales and Northern Ireland, use Careers Wales and NI Direct. Do not assume England's standard code, funding or entry timetable applies across the UK.

What to Keep and What to Check Before Taking Your Own Work
Keep original qualification and assessment evidence, plus a record of work scope and responsibilities. Before taking a job independently, check competence for the specific task, gas categories where applicable, supplier notification, building-control arrangements, insurance and the agreed scope.
Professional membership, a site card and WaterSafe approval answer different questions. The plumber business checklist covers the transition from occupational evidence to business preparation. Use the first-job pack and quote resource to agree scope and identify the handover documents.
