WaterSafe Lists Approved Businesses Through Participating Schemes
WaterSafe is a register of approved plumbing businesses. To join, meet the eligibility requirements through a participating approved-contractor scheme. Check the recognised plumbing and water-regulations qualifications, business/individual details and insurance evidence required by the actual scheme.
Joining WaterSafe is free for an already eligible contractor; underlying scheme membership, qualifying learning and assessment may have separate costs. Ask for those charges separately rather than treating a generic annual estimate as the WaterSafe joining fee.
WaterSafe approval, professional membership and Gas Safe registration have different purposes. The plumbing qualification guide helps identify which stage you need.

Approval Does Not Remove Every Notification Requirement
Specified proposed water fittings work must be notified to the water supplier. Approved contractors have exceptions for specified work; that is not permission to ignore all notifications, fittings requirements or supplier conditions.
Use the law and supplier guidance for the installation country: England/Wales have the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999; Scotland uses the Water Supply (Water Fittings) (Scotland) Byelaws 2014; Northern Ireland uses the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 2009. The water supplier's process is separate from local-authority building control and the customer's acceptance of a quote.
Identify the actual work and any claimed approved-contractor exception with the supplier or scheme before scheduling the affected installation. Do not copy a universal UK notification list or waiting period from another country's guide.
Copy This Supplier Notification Packet
Use the actual supplier's current form. This worksheet helps gather the inputs; it does not submit the notice.
| Packet item | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Premises | Installation address, country and actual water supplier. |
| Responsible contacts | Person requesting/authorising the work and the contractor's contact details. |
| Proposal | Description of the fittings/work and the location or schematic plan requested by the supplier. |
| Contractor evidence | Relevant approved scheme and current registration details if an exception is being considered. |
| Decision basis | Notification requirement or specific exception and the source confirming it. |
| Submission | Current form, submission date and supplier reference/acknowledgement. |
| Response | Supplier consent/conditions, the permitted scope and any questions still outstanding. |
| Completion record | Actual work, responsible contractor and required compliance/hand over documents. |
Use the Actual Undertaker's Guidance
- Scottish Water: use its byelaws notification form and current guidance documents.
- NI Water: use its water fittings regulations page for its notification process and requirements.
- England and Wales: identify the premises' actual undertaker and its current water-regulations notification route. A neighbouring supplier's form or deadline is not evidence for your job.
Checked 2 October 2026. Supplier consent, its conditions and any applicable statutory process must be established for the proposal. A calendar reminder or customer quote approval does not establish those facts.
Fictional Example: A Proposal, Not Assumed Consent
Lee is preparing plumbing work at a fictional property supplied by Scottish Water. Lee records the address and authorising contact, describes the proposal, prepares the requested plan and records the contractor's scheme details. Lee checks whether notification is required, uses Scottish Water's current process and keeps the response and its conditions with the proposal.
Lee's customer then approves a quote that identifies the supplier dependency and handover records. The customer agreement and the supplier response are stored as separate evidence. The example shows record preparation; it does not determine the notification status of any particular fitting.
Keep the Source, Decision and Handover Together
For a water-regulations update, record the source, issue date, installation country, affected work and the form or process to change. Use Water Regs UK's updates and the actual undertaker's documents rather than an old downloaded checklist.
Identify scope and approval dependencies in the customer quote. Keep actual supplier correspondence, work records and the applicable compliance document with the job record. Tradehand's business records do not submit supplier notification or decide an approved-contractor exception.
