How often do gutters need clearing?

It depends entirely on what is above them. A house with overhanging trees may need it twice a year, once after autumn leaf fall and once in spring; a house with no trees and a clean roof may go several years. Moss shed from tiles is an under-appreciated source, so a roof that has been moss-treated will often need the gutters done afterwards.

Where the water goes over — does it matter?

Yes, a lot. Overflow in the middle of a run usually means a dip or a local blockage there. Overflow at a corner or the far end from the downpipe usually means the outlet or the downpipe is blocked. Photographing the spill point in the rain saves diagnostic time.

Do gutter guards work?

They reduce how often you need to clear leaves, but they do not eliminate maintenance — fine grit, moss and pine needles pass through or mat on top, and a guard holding a wet mat above the waterline still overflows. Treat them as a way to lengthen the interval, not to end it.

Can I clear the gutter from the ground?

On a single-storey roof, often yes — telescopic gutter vacuums and hose attachments are made for it and keep you off a ladder. At two-storey height they become unwieldy and you cannot see what you are doing, which is where paying for proper access is the sensible call.

What's happening?

A gutter overflowing over its front lip in rain is almost always carrying less water than it should because something is in the way. Debris arrives from three places on a UK house: leaves from nearby trees, moss and grit shed off the tiles themselves, and silt washed off the roof surface. It settles at the low points and at the outlet, and once the depth of standing debris reaches the level of the outlet, the gutter becomes a trough that fills up and spills. The spill point matters diagnostically — water going over in the middle of a run points at a blockage or a dip there, water going over at the corner or the very end points at the outlet or a joint further along.

What usually causes it?

Blocked outlet where the gutter meets the downpipe, often just a compacted plug of silt and moss at the swan neck

Is it dangerous?

Not to you directly, but overflowing gutters do real and expensive damage to the building. Water cascading down a wall soaks the masonry, and saturated walls lead to penetrating damp inside, spoiled pointing and frost damage to brick. At the eaves, overflow water runs back onto the fascia and soffit and into the roof edge, which is how fascia rot and wet wall plates start. Below, water landing at the base of the wall raises ground moisture against the damp proof course. The other hazard is the access: gutter clearance means working at height, and HSE identifies falls from height as the leading cause of workplace deaths, with most domestic gutter incidents involving ladders.

Can I fix it myself?

Watch it and record it, which is genuinely diagnostic work. Stand out in the rain with an umbrella and note exactly where the water goes over — the middle of a run, a corner, or the outlet — and photograph it. That single observation usually tells the installer what they are dealing with. Between showers, look along the gutter line from the ground for a sagging section or a visible mat of vegetation. Ground-level clearing with a telescopic gutter vacuum or a hose-end attachment is a reasonable homeowner job on a bungalow or single-storey extension. Do not lean a ladder against a plastic gutter — it deforms and the ladder slides — and do not go up to a two-storey gutter without proper access.

When should you call a fascia, soffit and guttering installer?

Call within weeks if it only overflows in genuine downpours and nothing is wet indoors. Bring it forward to days if water is running down the wall in every shower, if there is damp appearing inside on that wall, or if the fascia below the overflow is soft or discoloured — at that point the overflow has already started causing the secondary damage. If it overflows even when you know the gutter is clear, that is a different fault and needs the capacity checked rather than another clean.

Set up proper access — a tower, scaffold or a ladder with a stand-off, rather than resting anything on the gutter
Clear the full run, the outlets and the downpipes, and flush through with water to confirm flow rather than just removing what is visible

Re-set or add brackets to correct dips, and re-align the run to fall towards the outlet
Fit or clear leaf guards and outlet grids where trees are the recurring cause, and explain the maintenance they still need
Check the fascia, soffit and roof edge behind the overflow for water damage while access is up, and report whether the gutter is simply blocked or genuinely undersized for the roof draining into it
