What is the best spirit level for builders?

For most builders one 120cm aluminium box level is the right first buy: long enough for a run of blocks or a window board, short enough to carry. Stanley's FATMAX XTREME, Kapro's 905 CONDOR and Hultafors' Aluminium HV are all listed at 0.5mm/m accuracy on their maker's pages. Add a digital level if you work to a stated angle or fall. Check the accuracy in the reversed position as well as the normal one, because a level you flip over to read a ceiling needs to be right both ways.

A spirit level checks a surface you can reach. For setting out across a room or a site, use a laser: see the best laser level for builders.

Key takeaways

  • Stanley FATMAX XTREME 120cm lists 0.5mm/m on the primary edge and 0.8mm/m on the secondary, a 10 year accuracy period with proof of purchase, and weighs 1.18kg.
  • Kapro 905 CONDOR lists 0.5mm/m in both normal and reversed positions, in lengths from 60 to 200cm.
  • Hultafors Aluminium HV lists 0.5mm/m normal and 0.75mm/m upside down, with a magnified horizontal vial.
  • Kapro 905DG Digital Condor lists under 0.05° at level and plumb and an IP65 rating.

Stanley FATMAX XTREME 120cm

Stanley's FATMAX XTREME 120cm box beam level (FMHT43676-1) has an extruded aluminium body and a continuous edge you can draw along the full length. The page lists 0.5mm/m accuracy on the fine milled primary edge and 0.8mm/m on the secondary edge, three vials with plumb vials 90% larger than before, and removable rubber-moulded end caps. This version is not magnetic. Stanley says it will remain accurate for 10 years under normal use if you supply proof of purchase, with a 1 year warranty against defects. Weight is 1.18kg assembled.

Kapro 905 CONDOR and Hultafors Aluminium HV

Kapro 905 CONDOR comes in eight lengths from 60 to 200cm. Kapro lists ±0.5mm/m in the normal and the reversed position, two solid acrylic break-proof vials, a Plumb Site Dual-View that shows the plumb vial from the front, cushioned shockproof end caps and an asymmetric profile with a reinforced vial bridge. Models up to 120cm have a continuous marking surface and a milled base. Magnets are not mentioned for the standard model: Kapro lists a separate 905M CONDOR as the magnetic version. All vials carry a lifetime accuracy warranty.

Hultafors Aluminium HV is made in lengths from 40 to 200cm. The page lists ±0.5mm/m normal and ±0.75mm/m upside down, crush-proof block vials with a magnified horizontal vial and a luminescent reflector, and shock-absorbing end protectors. The profile is aluminium, 51.5 x 25.3mm. The page does not list a magnetic version.

Kapro 905DG Digital Condor

The 905DG is a digital level in 60, 120 and 180cm. Kapro lists accuracy of under 0.05° at level and plumb and under 0.2° at other angles, an IP65 water and dustproof rating, strong magnets and a display that shows degrees, percentage, pitch in mm/m and inches per foot. It has a hold button, a false zero for setting a base angle, electronic re-calibration and an audible slope indication. Vials are break-proof Optivision Red, and the page offers a lifetime accuracy guarantee. The page does not give battery type or life.

It suits falls and pitches, such as a drain run or a ramp, where a bubble tells you level and a number tells you how far off you are.

What should you check before buying a spirit level?

  • Length: 120cm covers most work. Add a 60cm for tight spots and a door-length level (around 180cm) for door linings and long runs of blockwork. See the best laser level for setting out beyond that.
  • Accuracy, both ways: Kapro lists the reversed reading, Hultafors gives a looser figure upside down, Stanley gives a secondary-edge figure.
  • Magnets: if you work on steel studs or lintels, check the page. The Stanley 120cm and the standard Kapro 905 are not listed as magnetic.
  • Vial visibility: Kapro's Plumb Site front view and Hultafors' magnified horizontal vial are there for reading in poor light.
  • Accuracy guarantee: Stanley's is 10 years with proof of purchase, Kapro's is lifetime.
  • Check it on arrival: draw a line along a flat edge, flip the level and draw again. The lines should match.

For cutting to the line, see the best circular saw.

Frequently asked questions

What length spirit level should a builder buy?

A 120cm level is the best single length: it covers block courses, window boards and most frames. Add a 60cm for tight spots and a door-length level for linings. Kapro's 905 and Hultafors' HV both come in those lengths.

How accurate is a good spirit level?

The Stanley FATMAX XTREME, Kapro 905 and Hultafors HV pages all list 0.5mm/m in the normal position, which is half a millimetre of error over a metre.

How do I check a spirit level is accurate?

Place it on a flat surface, note the bubble, then turn it end for end in the same spot. If the reading is the same both ways, it is true. Do it on any level that has been dropped.

Is a digital spirit level worth it?

If you set falls and pitches, yes: Kapro's 905DG shows degrees, percent and mm/m. For plumb and level on blockwork a bubble level is enough.

Spirit level or laser level?

A spirit level checks the surface under it. A laser sets a level or square line across a room. Most builders carry both. See the best laser level for builders.
