uPVC Door Will Not Lock — The Handle Will Not Lift

The uPVC door closes, but the handle will not lift to throw the bolts, or it lifts and the key still will not turn.

What's happening?

A uPVC or composite door does not lock with a single bolt. Lifting the handle drives a gearbox inside the door edge, which throws several hooks, rollers and bolts up and down the frame at once, and the key then locks that gearbox in place. Two things go wrong, and they feel almost identical from outside. Either the gearbox has failed mechanically, or the door has dropped or swollen so the hooks are no longer meeting their keeps and the handle physically cannot complete its lift. The second is far more common, and it is also the cause of the first — a door that has been forced to lock for months puts every one of those loads through the gearbox until it shears. The Master Locksmiths Association makes the wider point about these doors that matters here: all of those locking points are operated by one mechanism, so the mechanism is what decides whether the door is secure.

What usually causes it?

  • The door dropped on its hinges, so the hooks no longer line up with their keeps
  • The slab expanded in warm weather, binding on the frame at the top or the latch side
  • Keeps in the frame worked loose or never adjusted after the door was fitted
  • The gearbox sheared internally after months of the handle being forced
  • A worn or wrong-size euro cylinder that will not turn the gearbox cleanly
  • The handle spindle worn or broken, so lifting the handle does not drive the gearbox fully
  • Debris, an old seal or a raised threshold stopping the door closing far enough to engage

Is it dangerous?

Treat it as urgent. A door that will not lock is an unsecured house overnight, and a gearbox that is on its way out usually fails completely rather than getting gradually worse — very often with the door shut and thrown, which leaves you locked out or locked in. On a final exit door that is a safety issue as well as a security one.

Can I fix it myself?

Test it with the door open. Lift the handle with the door standing open: if it lifts smoothly and the hooks all shoot out, the gearbox is fine and the problem is alignment — the door or the keeps. If it will not lift with the door open either, the gearbox has failed and nothing you do at the door will change that. Never force the handle when it resists; that is exactly how a stiff door becomes a sheared gearbox. Checking the hinges are tight and clearing debris from the frame is fair DIY.

When should you call a locksmith?

Call a locksmith as soon as the handle needs lifting hard, not when it stops working. At that stage it is usually a hinge and keep adjustment. Once the gearbox has gone, the door has to be opened, the multipoint stripped out and the exact strip identified by backset, centres and lock case, which is not something to work out by trial and error with the house standing open.

What will the locksmith actually do?

  • Test the handle with the door open to separate a gearbox failure from a misalignment
  • Adjust the hinges to lift the door back to its correct position in the frame
  • Reposition or replace worn keeps so every hook and roller engages without force
  • Identify and replace a failed multipoint strip by backset, centres and lock case dimensions
  • Fit the correct size cylinder to the door and check the whole door locks with the handle unforced
