What's happening?
A key turning with no resistance and no result means the lock has stopped connecting the key to the bolt. Every lock has a link between the part the key turns and the part that moves the door: on a euro cylinder that link is the cam on the back of the barrel, on a night latch it is the tailpiece running through the door to the case, and on a multipoint it is the gearbox behind the handle. When one of those breaks or shears, the key still rotates perfectly — it is just spinning against nothing. This is a mechanical failure rather than a key problem, which is why cutting a new key or lubricating the barrel changes nothing. It matters that you tell a locksmith the key turns freely, because that immediately points at the mechanism rather than the cylinder.
What usually causes it?
- The cam on the back of a euro cylinder sheared, so the barrel turns without driving the lock
- A fixing screw missing or loose, letting the whole cylinder rotate in the door
- The tailpiece on a night latch snapped or come out of the lock case behind the door
- A multipoint gearbox that has failed internally after months of a binding door
- A mortice lock with a broken follower or spring inside the case
- The bolt jammed hard into the keep because the door has dropped, so the mechanism has given way
- An old or corroded lock reaching the end of its working life
Is it dangerous?
It can leave you locked out or locked in, and being unable to open a final exit door quickly is a fire safety concern rather than an inconvenience. If the failure has happened with the door open, do not close it — a lock that will not throw or withdraw its bolt with the door shut is much harder and more expensive to deal with.
Can I fix it myself?
Almost nothing safely. If the whole barrel is rotating in the door, the retaining screw through the edge of the door may simply have come loose, and tightening it sometimes restores the drive — that is the one check worth making. Beyond that, forcing the key harder in the hope of catching something shears more of an already broken mechanism, and levering at the door edge damages the frame you will need afterwards.
When should you call a locksmith?
Call a locksmith now, and say the key turns freely without moving anything. If it happened with the door open, keep it open and wedged until they arrive. Where the door is the only way out of a flat or a bedsit, say so — that changes the priority.
What will the locksmith actually do?
- Establish which link has failed — cylinder cam, tailpiece, follower or multipoint gearbox
- Open the door non-destructively where the failure allows it
- Strip the lock case or the multipoint to confirm the broken component rather than guessing
- Fit a like-for-like or upgraded replacement to the correct standard for that door
- Correct the door alignment and keep positions that overloaded the mechanism in the first place
