What's happening?
Handset remotes on split systems are infrared, not radio. They need line of sight to the receiver window on the indoor head, they are defeated by a strong light source shining on that window, and their range is a few metres. Wall controllers are different: they are wired to the indoor unit over a low-voltage control cable, so a blank wall controller usually means a supply or cable problem rather than a dead controller. There is a useful test that separates a broken handset from a broken unit. Point the remote at a phone camera and press a button — most phone sensors see infrared as a faint purple flicker even though your eyes cannot. A flickering LED means the handset is transmitting and the fault is at the unit end.
What usually causes it?
- Flat or corroded batteries in the handset, or batteries fitted the wrong way round
- Infrared emitter or a button contact failed inside the handset after a drop
- Receiver window on the indoor head covered by dust, a picture frame, or blinding sunlight
- Handset locked, in a timer or sleep programme, or set to a mode the unit does not support
- Wall controller cable damaged, or its terminals corroded at either end
- Indoor unit's control board failed, so it receives the signal but does nothing with it
- System locked out on a fault, which some models signal by refusing all commands
Is it dangerous?
No. A controller that will not talk to the unit is an inconvenience, and the safe move if the system is stuck running is to switch it off at the isolator or the wall switch rather than at the consumer unit. The only thing to avoid is opening the indoor head or the wall controller back box to poke at the wiring, which is a low-voltage control cable sitting next to a mains supply.
Can I fix it myself?
Fit fresh batteries, checking the polarity, and try again from a metre away with a clear line of sight to the receiver window. Do the phone-camera infrared test to find out which end is at fault. Wipe the receiver window and move anything blocking it, and close a curtain if strong sun is falling on it. Check for a lock symbol or an active timer on the display. If the handset is dead and the model is common, a like-for-like replacement handset is a legitimate fix — most units also have a small manual on/off button hidden under the front flap that will run the system in an automatic mode meanwhile.

Call an air conditioning engineer if the handset transmits on the camera test but the unit still ignores it, if a wall controller is blank or showing nothing after its supply has been checked, or if the unit responds to its manual button but not to any controller. Those point at the receiver or the indoor control board rather than the handset.

- Confirm the handset transmits, then test the receiver on the indoor unit directly
- Check the supply and the control cable to a wired wall controller end to end
- Read any stored fault codes that would explain the unit refusing commands
- Replace the receiver assembly, the wall controller or the indoor control board as the test identifies
- Re-pair or reconfigure a replacement controller to the unit and reset installer settings
- Prove every mode and fan speed from the controller before leaving
