Error Code Or Flashing Light On The Unit

The indoor head is flashing its timer or operation lamp in a pattern, or the wall controller is showing a code like E4 or U0.

What's happening?

Split systems have no screen on the indoor head in most domestic installs, so they report faults by blinking the operation, timer or run lamps in a counted pattern. Wall controllers and the manufacturer's app show a two-character code instead. The codes are manufacturer-specific and not interchangeable — an E5 on one brand is a different fault from an E5 on another — so the model number on the sticker matters as much as the code. What the pattern tells you is which half of the system reported the fault. Codes in one family mean the indoor unit or its sensors; another family means the outdoor unit, the compressor or the inverter board; a third means the two units have stopped talking to each other over the interconnecting cable.

What usually causes it?

  • Communication fault between indoor and outdoor units, often a damaged or wrongly terminated interconnecting cable
  • Thermistor or sensor out of range, open circuit or shorted
  • High or low pressure trip on the refrigerant circuit, usually from a blocked coil or a lost charge
  • Inverter or compressor drive fault on the outdoor board
  • Outdoor fan motor failure, causing the system to trip on high pressure
  • Supply voltage out of range, or a phase or neutral problem at the isolator
  • Water in the drain tray triggering a float switch on units that carry one

Is it dangerous?

A code is the unit protecting itself and refusing to run, which is safer than the alternative. Do not keep resetting it to force another attempt — repeated restarts against a pressure or drive fault damage the compressor. Isolate the system and stop trying if the code comes with a burning or hot-plastic smell, scorch marks at the isolator, visible water on the electrics, or a breaker that trips as soon as you restore power.

Can I fix it myself?

Record the evidence before you do anything else. Film the flashing pattern on your phone, count the flashes and the pause, note the code on the controller, and photograph the model and serial numbers from the label on the side of the indoor head and on the outdoor unit. Look the code up in the manual for that exact model. One power cycle at the isolator, left off for a minute, is reasonable. If the code returns, stop there and pass the code and model on when you book.

When should you call an air conditioning engineer?

Call an air conditioning engineer if the code returns after a single reset, if the manual describes it as a pressure, compressor or inverter fault, or if the unit will not restart at all. Give them the code and model number when you call — it often decides which parts they bring, and saves a second visit.

What will the air conditioning engineer actually do?

  • Read the fault history from the controller or the outdoor board rather than relying on the current code alone
  • Cross-check the code against that manufacturer's service manual for the exact model
  • Test sensors, the interconnecting cable and the supply at the outdoor isolator
  • Measure operating pressures and currents while the system runs, where the code points at the refrigerant circuit
  • Replace the failed sensor, fan motor, capacitor or board, or quote for the compressor where that is the finding
  • Clear the fault log, recommission and confirm the system holds under a full run
