Kitchen Drawer Sticking Or Off Its Runners

A drawer drags, tips forward, will not push fully home, or has come off its runners altogether.

What's happening?

A modern kitchen drawer runs on a pair of full-extension runners, and it only works while both sides move together. If one side is even slightly lower, further forward, or carrying more load than the other, the drawer racks in its opening and starts to bind. That is why a drawer that has begun to drag rarely gets better on its own — every pull twists it a little more. The usual culprits are simple: an overloaded drawer, a runner screw that has worked loose in chipboard, or an item that has slipped over the back and is jamming against the carcase. Broken bearings, bent runners and split drawer bases are the ones that need parts rather than adjustment.

What usually causes it?

  • The drawer loaded past the runner's rated weight — pans and crockery add up fast
  • A runner screw loose or stripped in the cabinet side, letting one side sag
  • Something slipped over the back of the drawer and jammed between it and the carcase
  • Ball bearings or plastic rollers worn out on an older runner set
  • A runner bent by a drawer being dropped, forced or pulled off its stops
  • Grease and crumbs packed into the runner channel, stiffening the travel
  • The carcase racked or out of square, so the two runners are no longer parallel

Is it dangerous?

Mostly not, though a heavy pan drawer that comes off its runners can drop onto a foot, and a drawer stuck half open at hip height in a kitchen walkway is worth clearing rather than squeezing past. Keep children away from a drawer that is no longer held by its stops.

Can I fix it myself?

Empty the drawer and take it out — most runners release with a lever or clip on each side, or by lifting the front while pulling. Look down the empty runners for anything jammed, clean the channels, and check every runner screw for grip. Reload with less weight and see whether it runs. If a screw spins in its hole or a runner is visibly bent, stop there; forcing a bent runner back straight usually finishes it off.

When should you call a kitchen fitter?

Call a kitchen fitter when runners are bent, when bearings have collapsed, when screw holes in the cabinet side no longer hold, when the drawer base has split, or when several drawers in a run have gone at once. A fitter will identify the runner system and length so replacements match, which is harder than it sounds across the ranges used in UK kitchens.

What will the kitchen fitter actually do?

  • Remove the drawer and inspect the runners, bearings, stops and drawer base
  • Check the carcase for square, since racked units put both runners permanently out of line
  • Repair stripped fixings in the cabinet side properly rather than moving to a longer screw
  • Match and fit replacement runners of the correct system, length and load rating
  • Re-set the drawer front for even gaps against the doors and drawers around it
