Ice On The Pipework Or Indoor Unit

What's happening?

Ice on an air conditioning system in cooling mode is always a symptom, never a cause. The coil runs a few degrees above freezing by design; it only drops below zero when it cannot absorb the heat it was sized for. That happens when air is not reaching it — dirty filters, a failed fan, closed vents — or when the refrigerant pressure has fallen because gas has leaked out. Once ice forms it makes things worse, because the frost blocks the fins and starves the coil of air completely. This matters beyond comfort: liquid refrigerant that fails to boil off in an iced coil can return down the suction line to the compressor, and compressors do not survive liquid. A system icing up should be switched off rather than nursed along.

What usually causes it?

  • Filters or coil blocked, so airflow across the indoor coil has collapsed
  • Refrigerant charge low from a leak, dropping evaporating pressure below freezing
  • Indoor fan running slowly or not at all because of a motor or capacitor fault
  • Setpoint driven very low for long spells in cool weather, so the coil never gets warm enough between cycles
  • Blocked or restricted expansion valve or capillary, over-cooling one part of the coil
  • Outdoor coil filthy or the fan failing, disturbing pressures across the whole circuit
  • Ductwork or grilles closed off after a room was reconfigured, cutting the air the coil needs

Is it dangerous?

The ice will not hurt you, but leaving the system running while it is iced can wreck the compressor, which is the most expensive part of the machine. Ice also thaws, and a coil carrying a block of frost sheds far more water than the drain tray was designed for, so an iced unit often becomes a leaking unit an hour after you switch it off. Put a towel down. Do not chip or pick at the ice — the fins and the coil bends behind it are thin and easily punctured.

Can I fix it myself?

Switch the system off at the controller and leave it off. If your unit has a fan-only mode, run that with no cooling to melt the ice faster and dry the coil, keeping something absorbent underneath. Once everything has thawed, wash the filters and check nothing is blocking the indoor grille or the outdoor coil. If it ices again within a day or two of a clean restart, stop using it — that is a refrigerant or component fault and running it just risks the compressor.

When should you call an air conditioning engineer?

Call an air conditioning engineer if the ice returns after a thaw and a filter clean, if you can hear the indoor fan struggling or silent, or if you find oily residue on the pipework or at the flare joints, which is a classic sign of a refrigerant leak. Only an F gas qualified engineer may open the circuit to check pressures or recover gas.

What will the air conditioning engineer actually do?

  • Thaw the system fully and inspect the coil, filters and fan before taking any readings
  • Test the indoor fan motor and capacitor and measure actual airflow across the coil
  • Take suction pressure and superheat readings to separate an airflow problem from a low charge
  • Leak-test flares, joints and coils with an electronic detector where the charge is down
  • Repair the leak, then evacuate and recharge to the manufacturer's stated weight rather than topping up
  • Check the expansion device and the compressor for damage caused by liquid return
