L-Class vs M-Class: The Short Answer
The class letter on a dust extractor is a filtration performance rating, not a size or a power rating. It describes how much of the dust drawn in is allowed back out through the exhaust.
- L-class (low risk) is the entry rating. It suits softwood dust, plaster and general clean-up.
- M-class (medium risk) is substantially tighter and adds a required airflow warning, so the machine tells you when the hose is blocked or the filter is loaded and it is no longer pulling enough air. This is the class specified for hardwood dust and, critically, for silica-containing dust from concrete, brick, block, mortar, stone and screed.
- H-class (high risk) is for asbestos, lead and similarly hazardous material and is a specialist purchase with its own procedures.
If you cut, drill, chase or grind masonry, you need M-class. That is not a preference. HSE identifies respirable crystalline silica from those tasks as a cause of silicosis, lung cancer and COPD, and on-tool extraction is one of the two main controls it names, the other being water suppression. The same rule applies when the tool on the other end of the hose is a tile cutter on porcelain or a wall chaser in brick.
An L-class vacuum on a wall chaser is not a cheaper version of the right tool. It is the wrong tool, and the fine fraction it lets straight through the exhaust is exactly the fraction that reaches deep into the lung.

Which Tasks Actually Need M-Class
HSE's task-based dust guidance is the practical reference here, because it maps controls to the job rather than to the tool. Work through your own week against this split.
Silica dust, so M-class extraction or water suppression:
- Cutting or chasing concrete, brick, block and mortar
- Grinding, scabbling or planing concrete and screed
- Drilling masonry, especially core drilling and repeated fixings
- Cutting paving, kerbs and stone
- Sanding or removing render, plaster containing sand, and cementitious materials
Wood dust, where hardwood needs the tighter class:
- Sawing, routing and sanding hardwood and MDF: treat as M-class work
- Softwood sawing and general site clean-up: L-class is normally proportionate
Two points builders get wrong. First, a vacuum only controls dust while it is connected and pulling — a blocked hose on a machine without an airflow alarm is worse than useless because it feels like control. Second, extraction is not a substitute for RPE on high-dust tasks; HSE treats them as layers, not alternatives.

Best Corded M-Class Extractor: Makita VC3211M
For a builder who wants one machine that runs all day on a fixed site and takes both dust and water, a corded M-class drum is still the sensible core of the kit.
Makita specifies the VC3211M as approved for Dust Class M to the EU standard, with a 1050 W continuous input at 240V, an air volume of 3.5 m³/min, maximum sealed suction of 220 mbar, a 32 L dust and 27 L liquid stainless steel tank, a 3-part self-cleaning filter that Makita describes as removing dust from the pre-filters during operation, a hose supplied at 2.5 / 3.5 m in 28 / 38 mm diameters, and an IPX4 protection rating.
The specification to weigh is the automatic filter cleaning. On masonry work a filter loads fast, and a machine that pulses the filter clean on a timer holds its airflow through a job instead of tailing off after twenty minutes. Without it you are stopping to shake or change a filter, and in practice people stop doing that and carry on with reduced extraction.
The 32 L capacity is generous, which is a mixed blessing: a full drum of masonry dust and water is heavy, so consider where the machine has to be carried before treating the biggest tank as the best one.

Best Cordless M-Class Extractor: DeWalt DCV586M
Where a corded machine falls down is first fix on a plot with no supply, and any job where dragging a lead through a house is the actual problem. The DeWalt DCV586M is the 54V FLEXVOLT M-class answer.
DeWalt specifies it as M-class compliant and "suitable for use on construction sites", with a 54V XR brushless motor, two M-class compliant filters supplied, and a 32 mm internal diameter, 2.5 m flexible hose. It is sold as a bare unit on the 54V XR FLEXVOLT platform.
Two supplied filters matters more than it sounds. M-class filters clog, and on a chasing or coring job the honest workflow is to swap to the second filter rather than to carry on with a loaded one. A machine supplied with a spare makes the right behaviour the easy behaviour.
The compromise with any cordless extractor is runtime under sustained load. A vacuum pulling continuously through a loaded filter is a much harder duty than an impact driver, so budget for more batteries than you think, or accept that this is the machine for the first-fix and no-power jobs and the corded drum stays on the fitted-out sites.

When L-Class Is the Right Answer: Makita VC003GL
Not every job needs M-class, and a lighter L-class machine that actually gets carried up the stairs beats an M-class drum left in the van.
Makita specifies the VC003GL as approved for Dust Class L to the EU standard, running on the 40V XGT platform, with 310 W suction power, a 32 mm x 1.7 m hose, a 7.8 kg net weight (8.4–11.5 kg with batteries fitted), a revolving hose connection and a battery protection system that shuts off at low charge. Dimensions are 366 x 334 x 475 mm.
Use it for what its class allows: softwood dust, plaster, general clean-up, sanding dust from decorating, and keeping a client's house tidy. Its weight and size are the point — this is a machine you take into a bedroom rather than one you park in the hall.
What it is not is a masonry machine. Putting an L-class vacuum on a wall chaser, a diamond blade or a concrete grinder is the exact mistake this whole article exists to prevent. Softwood from a mitre saw is the job this class is actually for.

Filters, Bags and the Running Costs Nobody Quotes
The purchase price is the smaller half of what an extractor costs you. The consumables decide whether it stays effective.
Fleece bags versus emptying loose. A bagged machine costs a few pounds a bag but protects the filter and, more importantly, means you dispose of fine dust without releasing it again while tipping the drum. On silica work, tipping a loose drum undoes a chunk of the control you just paid for.
Filters are consumables, not fittings. M-class filters have a service life and a loaded filter reduces airflow before it fails visibly. Buy the spare with the machine and keep it in the van.
Hose diameter is a performance decision. A narrower hose gives higher velocity, which suits fine dust from sanders and chasers. A wider hose moves more volume, which suits chips and site clean-up. Buying the machine that came with the wrong hose for your main task is a common and avoidable mistake.
Power take-off and auto-start. A socket on the extractor that starts it when the tool starts means the vacuum is always running when the tool is, which is the single most reliable way to make extraction happen. Cordless auto-start over Bluetooth does the same job on battery platforms.
Antistatic hoses. Dry dust through a plastic hose builds a charge. On a long job that is a nuisance; near flammable vapours it is a hazard.
Setting Up Extraction So It Actually Gets Used
The most common failure is not choosing the wrong machine. It is buying the right machine and then working without it because it is inconvenient.
Match the tool shroud to the hose before the job, not on the job. Adaptors that fall off in the first ten minutes guarantee the tool gets used bare. Keep a small set of stepped adaptors and tape in the case.
Site the machine so the hose reaches without dragging. A hose under tension pulls the tool off line and pulls the machine over. Long hoses lose suction, so move the machine rather than adding hose.
Respond to the airflow alarm rather than ignoring it. On M-class machines the alarm is a required feature, and it is telling you that your dust control has stopped working. Clear the blockage or change the filter.
Keep RPE on for high-dust tasks anyway. HSE's position is that on-tool extraction, water suppression and RPE are layered controls. Extraction reduces exposure; it does not reliably remove it on cutting and chasing work.
Empty and clean the machine away from the work area. Ideally outside, with the bag sealed, and never by tipping a drum of silica dust into a client's bin at speed.

What to Check Before You Buy
- Dust class stated by the maker, in writing, on the manufacturer's own page. Merchant listings frequently describe an L-class machine in M-class language.
- Automatic filter cleaning, if you do masonry work. Without it airflow falls away mid-job.
- Whether a spare filter is included, and what a replacement costs.
- Hose diameter and length, matched to your main task rather than to the biggest number.
- Auto-start, by socket for corded tools or by Bluetooth on a battery platform.
- Wet capability, if you use water suppression or core drill.
- Weight full, not empty. A 32 L drum of wet masonry slurry is a two-person lift.
- Battery platform, if cordless, and how many batteries a sustained-suction duty will need.
