Rubbish and waste clearance problems

10 problems

Low risk

Old Sofa Or Armchair To Get Rid Of

Sofas, armchairs and dining chairs are treated as chemical waste in England and must be incinerated, not tipped or skipped with everything else.

Caution

Fridge Or Freezer To Dispose Of

Fridges and freezers cannot go in a skip or a general van load: the refrigerant and the insulation gas have to be extracted first, by someone qualified.

Low risk

Old Mattress To Get Rid Of

Mattresses are not covered by the sofa rules, but they are hard to recycle, banned from most kerbside collections, and a bed-bug risk if handled carelessly.

Low risk

Piles Of Garden Waste After Clearing The Garden

Hedge cuttings, brambles, turf and soil outgrow a green bin fast, and burning it or moving contaminated soil can both land you in trouble.

Caution

Builders' Rubble And Soil Left After Work

A heap of broken brick, plasterboard and subsoil on the drive after a job, and an argument about whose waste it legally is.

High risk

The Van I Paid Fly-Tipped My Waste

Your old furniture turns up dumped in a lane with a letter in it, and the council fines you, because checking the carrier was your legal duty.

Caution

Someone Has Fly-Tipped Rubbish Outside My House

A pile of bags, mattresses or building waste appears on your drive or verge overnight, and who pays depends entirely on whose land it is on.

Low risk

Clearing A House After A Bereavement

A whole house to empty, often to a deadline set by a sale or a tenancy, with documents and keepsakes still mixed in among the rubbish.

High risk

A House So Full You Cannot Use The Rooms

Rooms filled to chest height, blocked exits and floors nobody has seen for years: a clearance that is a fire and health risk before it is a rubbish job.
