What's happening?
Kettling is exactly what it sounds like: water boiling and flashing to steam inside the boiler's heat exchanger, then collapsing back — the same noise a kettle makes. It happens when water cannot move through the exchanger fast enough to carry the heat away, so localised patches reach boiling point. The two causes are almost always restriction and scale. Limescale forms on the hottest surfaces in hard-water areas; magnetite sludge builds up in the narrow waterways of a modern exchanger and does the same thing. Banging and knocking that come and go with the pump are a different noise with a related cause — trapped air, an overspeeding pump, or pipework that expands against a joist and releases with a crack.
What usually causes it?
- Limescale on the heat exchanger surfaces in a hard-water area
- Magnetite sludge restricting flow through the exchanger's waterways
- A pump set too slow, or failing, so flow through the boiler is inadequate
- Thermostatic radiator valves all closed at once with no bypass, starving the boiler of a circuit
- A partially blocked or closed isolation valve on the boiler's flow or return
- Air trapped in the boiler or the pipework directly above it
- A faulty boiler thermostat letting flow temperature run higher than it should
Is it dangerous?
Moderate. Boilers have overheat protection and will lock out rather than run away, so the immediate risk is low, but persistent kettling stresses the heat exchanger and shortens its life, and a heat exchanger is the most expensive part on the appliance. Loud banging can also be pipework moving under thermal stress, which eventually opens a joint. Do not ignore a boiler that has started making a noise it never used to make.
Can I fix it myself?
A little. Check the system pressure is in the right band, since low pressure reduces flow. Bleed the radiators and any towel rail to clear trapped air. Open a couple of radiator valves fully so the boiler always has somewhere to send heat, particularly if every room has a thermostatic valve that closes. Turn the boiler's flow temperature down a notch and see whether the noise reduces. Beyond that, descaling and flushing use chemicals and equipment that need to go in and come back out properly, and opening the boiler is not a homeowner task.
When should you call a heating engineer?
Call a heating engineer if the noise persists after bleeding and a pressure check, if it has appeared suddenly, or if it comes with radiators that are cold at the bottom. Call promptly if the boiler is also locking out on an overheat fault, because that combination points at a restricted exchanger. On a gas boiler, whoever works on it must be Gas Safe registered.
What will the heating engineer actually do?
- Measure flow and return temperatures across the boiler to quantify the restriction
- Check pump performance and speed setting, and replace a failing pump
- Chemically descale or flush the heat exchanger, or replace it where it is beyond cleaning
- Clean the system, dose with inhibitor and fit or service a magnetic filter
- Fit or reinstate an automatic bypass valve where thermostatic valves can close every circuit
- Secure pipework clips and add expansion allowance where banging is thermal movement
