Electric Gate Not Opening

What's happening?

An electric gate is machinery, not a fence with a motor. HSE treats powered gates as work equipment and machinery precisely because the hazards are the ones machinery has: crushing between the leaf and the post or a wall, shearing at the hinge, drawing-in at the drive, and impact from a large moving mass — and children have been killed by domestic powered gates in the UK. Responsibility for keeping a powered gate in a safe condition sits with the person who owns or controls it, which for a household means the homeowner. That is why the symptoms matter in a particular way here. A gate that stops partway or reverses is often the safety system doing its job — a photocell blocked, a safety edge triggered, or the force limiter detecting resistance — and the wrong response is to override it. A gate that has become unreliable is not just an inconvenience; it is a machine whose safety functions may no longer be working as set.

What usually causes it?

  • A blocked, misaligned or dirty photocell, so the gate reads a permanent obstruction
  • A safety edge or force limiter triggering because the leaf is binding, dragging or has stiffened
  • The gate leaf itself moved — a dropped leaf, a leaning post or heaved ground increasing the resistance the motor sees
  • Loss of mains supply, a tripped protective device, or a flat backup battery, so the gate will not run at all
  • Failed or de-programmed remote, keypad, intercom or receiver
  • Motor, gearbox, drive rack or chain worn, seized or damaged
  • On a sliding gate, debris or ice in the track, a bent track or the gate off its rollers; or water ingress into the motor housing or control panel, corroding connections and drifting the limit settings

Is it dangerous?

Yes. A powered gate is one of the higher-risk pieces of machinery on a domestic property. The serious hazards are crushing at the closing edge and against a fixed structure, shearing at hinges and drawing-in at the drive, and a sliding gate coming off its track or running away on a slope. Two behaviours should stop you using it: a gate that no longer stops or reverses on an obstruction, and a gate whose photocells or safety edges have been bypassed or are not working. Keep children well away from a powered gate at all times, do not let anyone stand in the closing path, and if the gate has become unreliable, put it into manual and leave it there until an installer has been.

Can I fix it myself?

Only the checks that do not touch the safety system. Look for the obvious obstruction first: something in the swing or the track, ice, debris, a bin, an overgrown shrub. Wipe the photocell lenses and check they are facing each other and not knocked out of line. Check whether other things on the same supply have power. Test the gate's manual release so you know how to get in and out — that is worth knowing before you need it. What you must not do is disconnect, bypass, tape over or adjust a photocell, a safety edge or a force setting to make the gate keep running. That removes the protection those devices exist to provide.

When should you call a fencing and gate installer?

Call an installer who works on automated gates rather than a general handyman, and treat it as urgent if the gate does not stop or reverse when it meets an obstruction, if a safety device has been bypassed, if the leaf or track has moved, or if there is any sign of water in the motor or control panel. Leave the gate in manual until then. HSE puts the duty to keep a powered gate safe on the person who owns or controls it, and that includes having a proper risk assessment and maintenance regime for it rather than only calling when it stops.

What will the fencing and gate installer actually do?

  • Establish whether the gate is refusing to run or the safety system is stopping it, before touching any settings
  • Check and realign photocells, safety edges and any inductive loop, and confirm each one actually stops and reverses the gate
  • Measure the closing forces against the limits the installation should meet, rather than adjusting by feel
  • Test the supply, protective devices, control panel and backup battery, and dry out or replace water-damaged components
  • Service the mechanics — motor, gearbox, drive rack or chain, rollers, track and hinges — correct a binding leaf, and reprogram remotes, keypads and receivers
  • Reset the travel limits, confirm the manual release works and show the household how to use it, then record the safety checks and flag where the installation falls short of what a powered gate needs

What to do before an installer arrives

A powered gate that has become unpredictable should be taken out of automatic operation rather than used carefully. The risk is not the inconvenience — it is that the safety functions may no longer be doing what they were set to do.

  1. Stop using the gate on automatic and put it into manual with the release mechanism.
  2. Keep children away from the gate entirely, including from the hinge side and the drive.
  3. Clear anything obstructing the swing or the sliding track, and wipe the photocell lenses.
  4. Do not tape over, disconnect or bypass a photocell, safety edge or force setting to keep the gate running.
  5. Note exactly what the gate does — stops partway, reverses, no response, noise — so the installer can start from the symptom.
