What's happening?

A balustrade is a guard, not a decoration: its job is to stop a person going over the edge. In a house the whole assembly works as one frame — the newel posts are anchored into the stair structure, the handrail and base rail span between them, and the spindles hold the rails apart. Loosen any one part and the rest starts to rack. Approved Document K expects guarding on stairs, landings and the edges of internal floors in a single-family dwelling to be at least 900mm high, with 1100mm on external balconies, and it must be built so a 100mm sphere cannot pass through — which is why a missing spindle matters as much as a loose one.

What usually causes it?

  • Newel post fixing loosened where it meets the string or the landing trimmer, letting the whole balustrade move
  • Spindles nailed rather than housed and glued into the rails, so they work free over time
  • Base rail or handrail no longer fixed tight to the newel, opening the joint at the top of the flight
  • Timber shrinkage in a dry, heated house loosening every joint in the assembly at once
  • Newel base cut off or notched during a previous flooring or carpet job, removing its anchorage
  • Spindles broken, missing or replaced with wider spacing, leaving gaps a small child can get through
  • Handrail bracket screws pulled out of plaster or a hollow wall on a wall-mounted rail

Is it dangerous?

Yes. This is the highest-risk fault in domestic joinery because the thing that fails is the thing meant to catch a fall, and it fails under exactly the load it exists to resist. A balustrade that moves when you lean on it will not hold an adult who stumbles, and a landing edge is a full-storey drop. Gaps where spindles are missing are a separate hazard for young children — Approved Document K's 100mm sphere rule exists to stop a child's head passing through. Treat a loose newel at the top of a flight as urgent and keep children off the landing until it is fixed.

Can I fix it myself?

Only the smallest part of it. A single spindle that has slipped out at the top can be glued and pinned back. A wall-mounted handrail with pulled-out screws can be re-fixed into a stud or a proper cavity fixing. Anything involving a moving newel post is not a DIY repair — the fix means getting a real fixing back into the stair structure, sometimes with a threaded newel bolt or a steel plate, and getting that wrong leaves a guard that looks fixed and is not. Do not simply pack the gap or add a bracket over a loose newel.

When should you call a carpenter?

Call a carpenter straight away if a newel post moves, if the handrail shifts more than a few millimetres at the top of a flight, or if spindles are missing. This is not a job to leave on a list. If the balustrade is below 900mm, has gaps a 100mm sphere passes through, or was built as a horizontal-rail design a child could climb, ask for it to be brought up to current guidance while the work is being done.

What will the carpenter actually do?

  • Load the balustrade to find where the movement originates, which is usually the newel rather than the part that rattles
  • Expose and re-anchor the newel post into the string, trimmer or joist, using a newel bolt or steel connection where needed
  • Re-fix handrails and base rails tight to the newels and remake the open joints
  • Rehouse, glue and pin loose spindles, and replace missing or broken ones to match
  • Check guarding height and the 100mm sphere gap requirement in Approved Document K and correct any shortfall
  • Refit wall-mounted handrail brackets into solid framing at 900–1000mm above the pitch line
