Why Electricians Buy a Torque Screwdriver: Quick Answer
Manufacturers state a tightening torque for terminals in consumer units, isolators, sockets and accessories. A normal screwdriver gives you no way to hit that figure, and both failure modes are expensive.
- Under-tightened terminals build resistance, run hot and are a recognised cause of connection failure and fire.
- Over-tightened terminals crush or shear the conductor and can crack the accessory, which fails later rather than immediately.
The tool that fixes this for domestic and light commercial work is an insulated (VDE) adjustable torque screwdriver: a handle that clicks and gives an audible and physical signal when the pre-set torque is reached, with insulated interchangeable blades so it can be used on or near live parts.

A torque screwdriver is what you use once you have isolated the board. It does not replace the rest of the kit in the electrician tools guide, and it does not replace a combi or SDS for the holes around the board.
Torque Range Is the Specification That Decides Your Purchase
A torque screwdriver only works accurately within its stated range, and the ranges are narrow. Buying the wrong one means either a tool that will not go low enough for small terminals or one that will not reach the value on a main switch.
Work out what you actually terminate:
- Small accessory terminals sit at the low end, often well under 1 Nm.
- Consumer unit outgoing device terminals commonly fall in the low single figures of Nm.
- Main switch, busbar and larger incoming terminals sit higher, and on some equipment above the range of a slim VDE handle altogether.
Do not treat those bands as values to work to. The number you tighten to is the one printed by the manufacturer of the accessory or board you are working on, not a general figure from an article or a rule of thumb. The point of listing the bands is to help you buy a tool whose range actually covers your work.
If your work spans small accessories and boards, most electricians end up with either a wide-range handle or two handles. Buying one narrow handle and forcing it beyond its range defeats the purpose of owning it.
Wera Series 7400 VDE Kraftform
Wera's VDE torque handle is a holder rather than a fixed screwdriver: it takes Wera Kraftform Kompakt VDE interchangeable blades, so one handle covers every tip style you carry.
Wera specifies the series across three handles: the 7440 VDE at 0.3–1.2 Nm, the 7441 VDE at 1.2–3.0 Nm and the 7444 VDE at 1.7–3.5 Nm. All are described as a torque VDE holder for safe work up to 1,000 volts, with a distinct audible and perceivable excess-load signal when the pre-set torque is reached, unlimited manual loosening torque, and rapid one-hand blade changes.
Two details are worth understanding before you buy. First, the ranges overlap but do not nest: the 7440 stops at 1.2 Nm, exactly where the 7441 starts. If your work sits either side of that line, you are buying two handles or accepting a gap.
Second, "unlimited manual loosening torque" means the clutch only limits tightening. You can undo a seized terminal with the same handle without damaging the mechanism, which matters because a torque tool used as a breaker bar is the usual way these get ruined.
The interchangeable blade system is the practical argument for Wera here. Instead of a bag of torque screwdrivers you carry one handle and a set of insulated blades, which is a genuine reduction in what goes in the bag.

Wiha TorqueVario-S electric VDE
Wiha's competing system is built around the same idea — an insulated adjustable handle with interchangeable insulated blades — with a wider top end and a published release accuracy.
Wiha specifies three handles: 26625 at 0.5–2.0 Nm, 26626 at 0.8–5.0 Nm and 26627 at 2.0–7.0 Nm, each with a release accuracy of ± 6 % to EN ISO 6789. The handles carry an integrated numeric scale set with a supplied adjusting tool, and give a clearly audible and physically perceptible signal at the set torque. What IEC 60900 and EN ISO 6789 Actually Tell You
Two different standards appear on these tools and they answer two different questions. Knowing which is which stops you paying for the wrong assurance.
IEC 60900 is the insulation standard for hand tools used on or near live parts up to 1,000 V AC. It is what makes a tool "VDE" in everyday trade language, and it requires individual piece testing rather than batch sampling. Wiha states its handles are tested at 10,000 V AC and approved for 1,000 V; Wera describes its handles as VDE holders for safe work up to 1,000 volts.
EN ISO 6789 is the torque tool standard. It covers how the tool is classified, marked and tested for accuracy, and it is the standard against which Wiha publishes its ± 6 % release accuracy.
A tool can hold one and not the other. An uninsulated torque screwdriver can be perfectly accurate and completely unsuitable for the work; an insulated screwdriver without a torque mechanism tells you nothing about tightness. For consumer unit and accessory work you want both marks on the same tool.
None of this replaces safe isolation. HSE's position is that work on or near live conductors should be avoided wherever it is reasonably practicable to work dead, and insulated tools are a control for the residual risk, not a licence to work live. A hot consumer unit is a reason to stop and investigate, not a reason to keep tightening.

Using and Storing a Torque Screwdriver Properly
A torque screwdriver that has been mistreated reads confidently and wrongly, which is worse than not owning one. Five habits keep it honest.
Wind it back to the lowest setting before it goes in the bag. Leaving a click-type mechanism under spring load for weeks is the standard way to drift the calibration. Both makers' handles are set by hand on a numeric scale, so this takes seconds.
Stop at the click. The signal is the tool telling you it has reached the value. Pushing past it applies torque the mechanism is no longer measuring, and repeated over-travel wears the clutch.
Approach the value smoothly. A slow, steady pull gives a repeatable release. Snatching at it gives you a reading that includes your own inertia.
Do not use it to loosen unless the maker says you can. Wera specifies unlimited manual loosening torque on the 7400 VDE, which is an explicit permission. Not every torque tool has it.
Treat a drop as a calibration event. These are mechanical instruments. A handle that has been dropped onto a concrete floor is out of calibration until proven otherwise.
Re-calibrate on the maker's interval, or sooner on heavy use. Wiha supplies a works inspection protocol with the tool, which is the document a client or a certifying body will want to see if the question ever arises.

Torque Screwdriver vs Torque Wrench vs Torque Bit
Three different tools get sold as the answer here, and they suit different parts of the same job.
The adjustable VDE torque screwdriver is the general answer for consumer units and accessories. One handle covers a range, it is insulated, and it takes the blades you already need.
Pre-set torque bits or limiters fix one value and cannot be adjusted. They are fast and cheap for a single repeated value, which suits a run of identical terminations. They are useless when the next board specifies a different figure, and they do not give you the insulated handle.
A torque wrench reaches values above what a slim screwdriver handle can deliver, which is where you end up on large incoming terminals, earthing and bonding connections and some switchgear. It is a separate purchase and generally not insulated to IEC 60900 in the same way, so it belongs to dead work.
Most UK domestic and light commercial electricians are well served by one adjustable VDE handle whose range covers their common work, plus the insulated blades they already carry. Add the second handle when your work genuinely straddles the range boundary, not on the assumption that more range is better. On an old fuse box that needs upgrading, you will use the handle on every outgoing device and the incoming connections — that is the job that wears a cheap uncalibrated driver out.

- The torque range against your actual work, checked against manufacturers' stated values for the boards and accessories you fit most.
- Whether one handle covers your span, or whether the range boundary falls in the middle of your normal work.
- IEC 60900 marking and individual piece testing, stated by the maker rather than by a retailer.
- EN ISO 6789 accuracy, and the published tolerance figure.
- Blade compatibility, because these are closed systems: Wera handles take Wera Kraftform Kompakt VDE blades, Wiha handles take Wiha slimBits.
- Whether loosening is permitted, which decides whether you need a second driver in the bag.
- Re-calibration route and cost in the UK, and whether a works inspection protocol is supplied.
