What's happening?
A pitched-roof array leaves a warm, sheltered, predator-free gap of a few centimetres between the panels and the tiles, and pigeons and starlings find it quickly. Once a pair is established the colony grows, and the damage runs beyond noise. Nesting material and droppings build up in the cavity and block the gutter and the valleys; droppings on the tiles and down the render are acidic and stain; debris under the panels holds moisture against the roof and around the fixings; and birds peck at and displace the DC cabling clipped under the array, which is a genuine electrical risk rather than an aesthetic one. The fix is mesh — a fine, rigid mesh clipped to the panel frames all the way round the array so nothing can get in — and the timing of that work is constrained by law, because the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while that nest is in use or being built.
What usually causes it?
- A standard on-roof mounting system, which by design leaves a ventilated gap under the panels
- No bird proofing fitted at installation, which is normal — it is rarely included as standard
- An established local pigeon population, or a neighbouring array already colonised
- Feeding in nearby gardens keeping a large resident flock
- Existing mesh fitted badly, with gaps at the corners or at the ridge end of the array
- Eaves or verge details that already let birds onto the roof easily
Is it dangerous?
Two real risks, one to the building and one to health. Nesting debris under an array traps moisture against the roof covering and blocks gutters, and birds damage the DC cabling routed under the panels — the same cabling that is live in daylight. Accumulated droppings are also a health matter: dried droppings should not be dry-swept or disturbed without protection, which is one reason clearance is a job for people equipped for it. Never go on the roof to look.
Can I fix it myself?
Almost nothing, and that is the honest answer. This is roof-level work over a live DC array, and the Wildlife and Countryside Act limits when a nest can be touched at all. What you can do from the ground is establish how bad it is: watch where the birds go in, look for a build-up in the gutter below the array, and check the wall for staining. Stop feeding birds nearby. Then book the work for outside the nesting season if a nest is already in use, because that timing is a legal constraint rather than a preference.
When should you call a solar installer?
Call a solar installer, or a specialist bird-proofing firm working with one, as soon as you are sure birds are getting under the array. The reason to involve the solar side is the cabling: proofing means working around live DC wiring and panel frames, and clips must not be fixed in ways that void panel warranties or damage the mounting system. Get the gutters and the cavity cleared at the same visit.
What will the solar installer actually do?
- Inspect the array perimeter and the cavity beneath it for nests, debris and blocked gutters
- Time the work so that no nest in use or being built is disturbed
- Clear nesting material and droppings from beneath the array and from the gutter runs
- Check and re-secure DC cabling that birds have pecked, displaced or damaged
- Fit rigid mesh clipped to the panel frames around the whole perimeter, with no gaps at corners
- Test the strings after the work to confirm nothing was disturbed during clearance
