Why do I feel a tingle when touching my washing machine?

What's happening?

A tingling sensation from an appliance means a small amount of electrical current is leaking from the appliance to its metal casing. In a correctly working installation, this leakage current should flow safely to earth through the earth conductor in the plug and cable. If you can feel it, the earthing pathway is either broken, has high resistance, or the leakage is high enough to be felt despite the earthing. Some appliances (particularly older ones) have small amounts of normal leakage, but you should never feel a distinct tingle or shock.
