Light Fitting Buzzing

Your ceiling light or light fitting is making a buzzing or humming noise.

What's happening?

A buzzing light fitting is common and usually related to the type of bulb, the ballast in a fluorescent fitting, or a compatibility issue with a dimmer. Most light fitting buzzes are annoying rather than dangerous, but some causes do need attention. Fluorescent tubes are particularly well known for buzzing as their ballast ages, and LED bulbs can buzz if they are running on an incompatible dimmer or transformer.

Is it dangerous?

Usually not dangerous. A buzzing ballast in a fluorescent fitting can eventually fail and may leak a small amount of tar-like substance — replace the fitting if this happens. A loose bulb connection could theoretically cause arcing, so ensure bulbs are properly seated. If the buzzing is accompanied by flickering, a burning smell, or the fitting feels hot, it should be investigated.

Can I fix it myself?

Try tightening or replacing the bulb first. If using a dimmer, switch to bulbs confirmed as compatible with your dimmer model. For fluorescent fittings, replacing the tube may help, but if the ballast is the source, the whole fitting usually needs replacing. Replacing a light fitting is something a confident DIYer can do with the circuit switched off at the consumer unit, but if in doubt, call an electrician.
