What's happening?
Door intercoms and entry systems allow you to speak with visitors and remotely release a door lock or gate. They range from simple audio buzzers common in flats to video door entry systems. When they fail, you may not be able to hear visitors, see them on camera, or release the door remotely.
What usually causes it?
- Internal handset or monitor not receiving power
- Wiring fault between the external panel and internal unit
- Door release mechanism jammed or failed
- External panel damaged by weather
- Flat wiring disconnect in communal systems
- Power supply unit failure
Is it dangerous?
A non-working intercom is not an electrical safety risk. However, if it controls access to a communal entrance, other residents may also be affected. In some cases, the door release may fail in the open position, creating a security concern.
Can I fix it myself?
Check that the internal handset is properly on its cradle or connected. For systems with a plug-in power supply, check the power adapter is plugged in and working — try a different socket. In communal systems, check with neighbours to see if the issue affects everyone or just your flat. Check for a fuse or reset button on the system.
When should you call an electrician?
Call an electrician if the intercom has no power and you have checked the supply, if you can hear but the door release does not work, if the system has a video screen that shows no picture, or if the external panel appears damaged.

Why can I hear visitors but not open the door?
The audio part of the intercom is working but the door release has failed. This could be a faulty electric lock, a wiring issue to the lock, or a fault in the handset's release button.
Who is responsible for communal intercom repairs?
In communal buildings, the freeholder or management company is usually responsible for the shared intercom system. Individual handsets within flats may be the leaseholder's responsibility — check your lease.
Can I upgrade my old buzzer to a video intercom?
Yes. Modern video intercom systems can often use existing wiring (with some additions) or wireless systems can be fitted without any new cabling. An electrician can advise on the best option for your setup.
Why does my intercom have static or poor sound?
Poor audio quality is usually caused by deteriorating wiring, loose connections, or a failing speaker in the external panel. In communal systems, the external panel is exposed to weather and often degrades over time.
