Reviewers of Ye Olde Woodworkery describe Troy and his team carrying out bespoke joinery and restoration work, including windows, doors, staircases, furniture and repairs on old and listed buildings. Several reviewers say they were pleased with the standard of the finished work and with the care taken over the detail, and a number note that the team left the site clean and tidy. Communication is often mentioned, with reviewers reporting it was good and easy, and many say they would use the business again or recommend it. One reviewer said a written job spec had some details that were not quite right, though these were corrected when pointed out, and that a follow-up problem not caused by the door was fixed without fuss.
We would highly recommend Troy. He has just made and fitted a couple of windows to our very old and wonky house. He has done a great job. He also left everything very clean and tidy.
Troy is a true professional and his work goes above & beyond! Communication and reliability, excellent. I would highly recommend.
Ye Olde Woodworkery installed a roof window at my house two years ago. I was very satisfied with that work so I called Troy Thomas this year to replace another window at my old house. This one is similarly well constructed and skilfully fitted with repairs to the surrounding brickwork as well.
Cannot speak highly enough of Troy and Lee, amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail. Job to such a high quality, everything was left spotless. A+++
Great work. Good communication and very skilled and professional.
Troy and his team did a first class job hanging 14 interior doors to a very high standard. They were professional and courteous and kept the dust and wood shavings to a minimum. We are very happy with the work carried out and will be using the team again in the near future for another project we can only highly recommend them.
High quality work to an excellent standard. Very pleased.
I can’t thank Troy enough for the exceptional quality of his craftsmanship and the care that has been taken making a case for my grandparents long case clock. The clock face was bought by my grandfather, as a present for my grandmother, in a second hand shop in London to mark their first anniversary some 60+ years ago. A set of plans were commissioned around the same time but the project proved too much and my grandparents couldn’t find anyone willing to create a case for the clock face. In 2020 the clock and plans were rediscovered and after a consultation with Troy at his shop in Wantage the long lost dream of having the clock completed came to fruition. Troy was able to make several changes to the plans we had to achieve exactly the design my grandfather had hoped for. Care was taken to redesign the clock hood so that maintenance would be easier than the original plans would have allowed it to be. Troy provided a number of options for colours and stains with examples for us to see. The after care and advice how to continue to care for the piece was fantastic too. This was truly a bespoke piece in every sense of the word and a huge undertaking, my grandparents were both thrilled with the results and this beautiful piece will be in the family’s for generations to come thanks to Ye Olde Woodworkery. Thank you very much Troy.
My dad wanted to get out dining room table redone, as it has been with us for a while, and needed some well deserved TLC. Troy sanded it back and completely re waxed it, and it looks as if it were new. He even let us use some of the same wax for restoring my dad’s guitar collection. A genuine, down-to-earth man, and has a love for what he does, which shows in the quality of work time and time again. Cannot recommend him enough.
Troy Thomas is a veritable period building polymath. He instantly saw the problem with our stairs and how to remedy them by making them safer and easier to use, and also made them so they complimented the building. His knowledge on all things to do with period properties and experience in working on them is much to be admired. The whole team was a joy to have a round.
Reconfiguring a room we needed a bespoke replacement bookcase and cupboard fitted to adjoin existing bedroom units. We were delighted with the finish. It was exactly what we asked for and the quality was excellent.
Troy and Lee recently did a ceiling plaster repair for us in our listed cottage. They did an amazing job, worked fast and efficiently and are both just really friendly and a pleasure to be around. It's clear to see that Troy has a wealth of knowledge and expertise with period properties, which means you can relax and know that the job is in safe hands!
Ye Olde Woodworkery did a fantastic job helping me complete a couple of small, bespoke woodworking projects in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Friendly and knowledgeable, I'd recommend them highly to anyone looking for skilled carpenters in the Wantage area.
I wanted quite a unique wooden board game made for my mum for Christmas- from start to end the journey with Ye Olde Woodworkery was fantastic. Great communication throughout , reasonably priced , the game was made ahead of schedule and the final product was made to the absolute highest of quality and exactly as I had wanted. Really pleased and if ever I need any woodwork doing again I won’t hesitate to use this company again - I highly recommend.
2 skilled craftsmen at work In here. I needed a bit of help cutting something and called her sort of on the off chance. They could not have been more kind and helpful, Thank you, top fellas
Replaced a section of our timber framed house, as well as replacing some other external woodwork. Helpful, reliable, reasonably priced and did a great job.
Troy and Lee made and fitted a replacement solid wood cottage-style front door for our Grade 2 listed cottage. They painted it prior to fitting it. They also fitted new locks, door knocker, letter box, etc. All done to a high standard. They are craftsmen. It wasn't an easy job because things in a Tudor cottage are always a bit wonky. From what others tell me, I think the price was reasonable too. Communication all fine - email and phone. Written job spec/simple contract had some details in it that were not quite right but Troy corrected those when pointed out. I had a follow up issue - which turned out to be nothing to do with the door itself. Nevertheless Troy cheerfully and quickly rectified the problem. It was to do with the weatherboard at the bottom of the door frame. Troy had only made the door. We had left the previous door frame in so the door frame wasn't Troy's responsibility. It turned out that a metal strip along the door frame weatherboard was gradually lifting up due to moisture getting into the wood it as it is quite old. This was causing the bottom of the door to rub against the metal strip. Even though it was nothing to do with the door he had made and fitted, Troy kindly resolved the metal strip problem.
We wanted a family chair restored and were delighted with the friendly efficient and prompt service we received. We are very pleased with the outcome and are happy to recommend ye olde woodworkers.
Excellent service and very reasonable price. Helped us out very quickly after we developed a leak following all the rain. Would highly recommend.
Excellent service and very prompt. Highly recommended- did an excellent job of re polishing three ash tables.
Came out to the house quickly and got the job done same day.
Absolutely thrilled with the exceptional restoration work done by Ye Olde Woodworkery on our Georgian period listed house porch columns! Troy's craftsmanship is truly unparalleled — meticulous attention to detail and a keen eye for perfection. The columns look stunning! It was such a complex and demanding job - we feel blessed we found Troy: his highest level of professionalism, expertise, and dedication to excellence are beyond compare. Separately, would like to highlight his remarkable punctuality: the entire process was so pleasant and seamless. We're eagerly looking forward to collaborating with Troy and the team again in the future. Highly recommend Ye Olde Woodworkery — five stars without a doubt!
Made and fitted a beautiful bespoke solid wooden back door. It was exactly as I requested, fits perfectly I am beyond pleased and will definitely use them again.
Ye Olde Woodworkery turned a replacement finial for the top of my porch. They did a wonderful job and it was great to find such skills locally.
After months of looking for a builder/joiner who had knowledge of listed buildings I came across Troy. When he came to look at the work needed it was obvious he has great knowledge as to what older buildings need. The work completed was to a really high standard and looks fantastic. He also turned up when he had arranged to, which seems to be a rarity in the trade these days! We will be be using him again. Thanks again.
Troy replaced three windows and 2 doors, all work done with great attention to detail and finish including cleaning up afterwards. Highly recommended.
We recently purchased a period property and had concerns about finding someone we could trust to refresh our tired house to make it our home, while being sympathetic to the property's heritage. Our concerns are history since meeting Troy who has so far replaced flooring throughout the ground floor, as well as replacing our internal oak doors. We have also booked for our staircase, windows and front entrance door to be replaced in the summer. Our quirky home is not easy to work with and presents lots of challenges that only someone with Troy's knowledge and experience could overcome. We're always thankful for his hard work and attention to detail.
Troy built me a customised home desk and chair made out of solid oak wood. I absolutely love it, as it is perfect for my work from home job .
Troy did an amazing job on our listed timber framed thatched house. He did repairs to the timber and wattle and daub panels and the quality was exceptional. He’s a really nice guy and extremely knowledgeable, the price was very fair, couldn’t ask for more. I’d recommend him 100% for any work.
Troy and his were so helpful. They had lots of inspiring ideas and fitted our stair spindles and rail very promptly. Very professional
Troy upgraded my front door and installed a new window for my property. I would not hesitate to use this company again. The work is beautiful, they’re great to work with, on time, could not have been easier.
I own a Victorian church and was looking for someone to restore the original oak gates. After many failed attempts to find anyone who understood that I did not want a pair of new ones, and that I wanted the originals restored. Almost giving up, I quite by chance found Ye Olde Wood Workery and Troy. I can only agree with all of his five-star ratings, he took a pair of dilapidated and in some parts rotten pair of gates and restored them quite beautifully, without taking away any of their old charm. They look like they should look, and I am delighted and happy not only with the standard of work, but the excellent communication and attention to detail. He also arrived when he said he would and returned them when he said he would. We managed to communicate almost completely by email, which I found very convenient and easy, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. I shall not hesitate to contact him again with other projects. It was a lovely change to talk to someone who understood the remit and dealt with the job accordingly. On a side note, they had been returned less that 24 hours when four complete strangers commented on how beautiful they looked.
Troy was really helpful and made the base for a bespoke gift - at short notice - and well beyond my basic spec! Brilliant - thanks!
Wonderful experience, well priced, friendly and highly communicative service, we are delighted with their work and couldn't recommend them enough!
Troy and his son made and installed new exterior doors for our property and also an oak fire surround. We are thrilled with both. They are made with good quality wood and to a very high standard. The workmanship is great and we received a very professional, responsive service. I would recommend Ye Olde Woodworkery for your woodworking jobs.
We live in a grade 2 listed property, so had to have custom made windows. We were delighted with the results, the windows looked exactly like the others, fitted beautifully and and looked really good. Troy gave a really professional service from beginning to end. He’s a really nice guy too.
Troy and his colleague built and installed a cupboard with shelving in our spare bedroom. Good quality job, friendly and tidy work, good matching of skirting and architraves to existing room fittings. Nice job lads!
We recently moved to a new house and Troy has done some amazing work for us inside and outside the house. The biggest job was making 2 fantastic gates ( one is pictured below). He also made us a cupboard and a shelving system for our airing cupboard. We are delighted with the quality of his work and would highly recommend him. Mary and Nigel Kelly.
Troy has done loads of work in our house from repairing lime plaster walls, repairing 16th century floor boards, restoring sash windows, designing and constructing oak and lead casement windows, re-profiling our kitchen roof and most recently installing a stone fireplace. He is knowledgeable, skilful and reliable.
Troy and his team did an excellent job repairing and refurbishing our floor, he is knowledgeable, friendly, prompt and reliable. Very happy with the work done.
Pleasure to deal with, small job but on time, no hassles!
Really lovely job replacing 4 panes in an old leaded window smashed in last month's storms. Easy to arrange, Troy and team were great - thoroughly recommended
Troys passion for his work shines through in all he does. His extensive knowledge of period correct methods and materials gives us complete confidence that all works are in keeping with our listed property. Finding trades, as much as competent, with traditional techniques is becoming increasingly difficult. For that reason, Troy and his staff are truly Master Craftsmen in a dying trade.
