Reviews of Amber Valley Borough Council are heavily mixed. Several people say emails go unanswered, departments give conflicting replies, and staff have been rude or sarcastic on the phone and at reception. Some report missed bin collections and damaged bins, with one saying a replacement bin never arrived after calls and emails and one saying a refund for a paused green waste licence was still owed ten weeks on. Others praise helpful and friendly council tax staff, a thorough notice of marriage appointment, a planning adviser who gave excellent advice, and a cemetery team who keep the grounds tidy and are polite. One reviewer thanks Dave Shaw and the team for installing a memorial bench at Belper Cemetery, another says a council officer sorted a flooding problem in a day after six months, and another reports complaints being dealt with within four days.
Just phoned the council to enquire why my daughters bin had not been lifted, I placed that bin out personally, but hey,the bin collector's stated it wasn't out,odd that, the driver must've been stevie wonder on spacedust not to have seen it,they disputed my claim that I had put it out, that's fine next-door door has cctv, but it's ridiculous that you have to prove the claim.it would be a different story if the council tax wasn't paid for that week, with us saying we did but the council has to prove we didn't.
Nothing gets done. No transparency and excuses everytime.
It took me years to learn this "every government body runs terribly" having to move so many times over my life, AVBC must be the worst Council I have ever had to deal with, never reply to emails or to ASB, as long as they make money for themselves they really not interested
Dont reply to emails and dont care
I visit my mental health nurse here. Excellent service with staff that care.
Can only say that in 26 years living here, I have found them to be efficient and effective. Every person I have dealt with has been perfectly capable and friendly - especially the Council tax staff.
I would like to say a very big thank you to Dave Shaw and all the team involved with installing a new memorial bench for my family at Belper Cemetery. I am absolutely delighted with it, thank you again for such excellent service.
Staff have no compassion, should work in that role especially Kylie
A council in total chaos, refuse to reply to emails, avoid truthful replies when they do and different departments give widely conflicting replies. AVBC does what it wants, but tells the residents to do the opposite. Needs a new complaint procedure and change of managers in some cases. Not fit for purpose.
Leabrooks cemetery - credit where credit is due. The upkeep is better than it has ever been I go there a lot as I have a grave their that I attend and lately the cemetery has been looking very clean tidy. The grounds have been maintained very.well. the grass is cut short. The operatives who look after the cemetery are always very polite and helpful. I just wanted to say thank you.
Been living in our new house for around 6 months & our drive is on the front with our bins a few feet from the street & most of the time we do forget to take our bins out but the bin men always seem to take it thankfully. For some reason this one time they didn’t want to and wrote on there system that it was not out but they always take it as it is a few feet away from the street so I rang up and asked them but instantly they put up a front and are really rudely spoken, I can imagine they have a lot of phone calls to other people being rude but I was so polite and understanding and still got spoken to like I was being rude. Discussing the way they talk to nice people…!
Absolutely terrible customer service! Email after email go ignored and unanswered. Tried to talk with them about the awful recycling collection service and they just do not want to know. Seen the bin men just leave litter in their trail with no regard. They throw bins back towards houses, and bash them until broken. They just leave glass boxes that look a tiny bit heavy, and wont even talk to residents about why even when stood there. If they were any other service, I'd "switch" supplier....but of course, with these, we have no choice and they know it. It's time they were held to account better really.
Very rude sarcastic reception staff who don’t know how to deal with people. If you’re in a customer facing role you need to be friendly and polite!
Very good
The people I have have spoken to at Amber Valley Council dept have been extremely rude & in one case sarcastic, learn some manners !
Refuse collection. We had slight overflow of recycling we had to take the glass part out. Why do the bin men just throw them back on the garden and flatten flowers. Are they to idol just to put it in the bin. Would they like there gardens ruined.
We have contacted the council on three occasions in the last month and they have been out to the complaints each time inside four days on one occasions it was inside 48hrs. Thanks Amber valley employees for doing a good job.
Went to give notice of marriage. Very Thorough
Spoke to planning today (Mr Thompson), he gave me excellent advise, his knowledge is exceptional. Thank you.
No wonder they have to specifically ask callers to speak to their staff politely on the automated phone message when the service is this poor. Nearly 2 months ago I reported my garden waste bin had been so damaged by the collectors I needed a new one. Three phone calls and two emails later still no new bin. They didn't even bother to respond to the first email and I've been fobbed off on the phone. Then today no recycling collection again on my street. Appalling council services.
Disgusting service from the housing team, promised a call back from management, never received, I'm now homeless with no support from them.
My enquiry was dealt with by A Worthington and it was pleasant, quick and exactly what I needed, which is rare these days! Thank you!
Asked for 2 broken wheelie bins to be removed in April. Still here in July despite multiple chases. Bored of ringing to now. Going over someones fence this afternoon I think. No delay taking my council tax payments though let me tell you.
Renewed my bus pass at the Ripley Office. My email enquiry was answered in a very friendly and helpful way and I decided to go to the Council Offices. It couldn't have been easier. Reception staff were great and took my photograph for the pass. It all worked out well. Thanks to Amber Valley Borough Council staff in Ripley
Absolutely ridiculous service and rude staff, waste of time and the worst council I have ever dealt with.
Very poor customer service and support. I purchased a license for green waste which was then "paused". 10 weeks later I am still awaiting my refund even though i have had the bin taken away and the license has been personally delivered back to them!
If you have any land and are thinking about enquirying for building land definitely worth applying to amber valley as they pass everything.
Absolutely awful. When requesting disability services, I was told my disability was a lifestyle choice (I was in an accident that wasn't my fault, so I had no choice in the matter) and that I should stop playing the disability card.
Amazing people here, helped me when no one else would. Wheelchair accessible and accommodate your needs and privacy.
The lady I spoke to today couldn't have been more helpful and has to be one of the most pleasant people I have spoken to on the telephone for a while!
They don't care about local safety of children, emergency vehicle access to residence and estates. Don't care about people's objections even when overwhelming. Just give planning to anything that lines there pockets because there an irresponsible council and strapped for cash. 😡 Lost my vote
I had a collection of glass from the house refused and left next to our recycling bin with a sign "Unsafe to lift". There were possibly 6 bottles over the top of the bin which I carried quite easily and safely. On talking to the Council, I was told "It's not within the collection crew's contract to lift unsafe bins". What utter lunacy. By the time that the crew member had gone back to lorry, written out his barely legible comment - he / she could have simply picked up the extra 6 bottles - then left a note saying that, in future, could we put extra bottles in a bag. The person taking the call for the Council was also a very sad example of the Council's attitude - and all of this when recycling is a very prominent issue. The Council need to move away from this pitiful "jobs-worth" approach and start living in the real World. The whole episode is totally pitiful - the individuals concerned should be thoroughly ashamed - although the problem is , no doubt, systemic. Disgraceful - if I could give negative stars, I would. A rating of one star is 5 too many
I moved into the area in December 2018. Since then I have been passed around various councils and utility companies, about the flooding and damage to my property. I contacted Mr Gladwin last week 05/07/2019, he took ownership of the problem straight away, liaising with other third parties and managed to do in a day what had taken 6 months. I cannot thank him, his team and Wayne enough. It is so refreshing to see a person / team to take ownership of a problem and sort it. This proactive approach, saves Amber Valley money. I wish the AV planning department showed the same enthusiasm and approach. Thank you John J Monaghan CMgr FCMI. FInstLM. AMICE. MAPM. NECReg
I have just rung Amber Valley Council to amend my banking details for my Direct Debit to pay my council tax. I was put through to the correct department straight away and was met with a very cheerful and polite young lady who quickly did as requested in a matter of seconds. I have also had to do this to another two companies both of which took forever in fact my internet provider took 20 minutes. Well done Amber Valley for being so efficient.
Am not sure who I just spoke to on the phone this morning of 25th May regarding a bin replacement but they need to seriously reconsider how they speak to people. We pay our council tax and make a simple request to be spoken to in a snappy, rude and condescending manner? Very disappointed.
Not good at all. Nobody cares about poor people at all. Streets are dirty and nobody cleans them although everybody has to pay a council tax
This is a difficult one for me, because I have had good and bad with them. But, the bad is generally the people they subcontract out to, futures being the main culprit for the heaviest of critical votes I will give 3/10. Mainly because they are slow, and really like their breaks far to often. But by far the very worst subcontractors are the team that retiled our roof, infact they were close to killing me! This is not a joke or exaggeration.....I walked out of my front door and the "rain stopper" above the door him me in the head! They had dropped a load of the tiles, which smashed down onto the rainstopper thing which bumped me on the head, if it had not been there I would have been severely injured at best! But, the counsel themselves are mediocre at their jobs too. It doesn't bide well really! 3/5 just because they do get "it" done.....eventually.
Totally dislike Amber valley Borough Council, everytime there is a issue or with my bin not being emptied properly, it's all too much hassle for them. Disgusting service how they get away with it is anyone's guess!!
One third of Amber Valley Borough Council in Derbyshire, England is elected each year, followed by one year without election. Since the last boundary changes in 2000, 45 councillors have been elected from 23 wards.
I have to agree with some of the other reviewers; I have contacted this council on two important matters in the past couple of years. They simply found it all too difficult to take action - even requesting that I do their work for them on one occasion. Yet when I submitted an application to review my Council Tax band they were all over it..... Shock. My experiences unfortuntaely reinforce the stereotype views we have of local civil servants, i.e. can't be bothered; too busy moaning about their salaries (compared to the Private sector where people have to work to stay employed); can't think beyond their old-fashioned policies and processes.
I have always found the council helpful and do their best to resolve matters
cant even get leaves sweeped up in somercotes outside church i slipped on them !!!
