As a landlord, my experience with William H Brown was extremely disappointing. I trusted them to manage my property professionally, but instead dealt with poor communication, lack of transparency, and minimal proactive management. Updates were infrequent and often only provided after repeated follow-ups. Issues with the property and tenants were either not flagged early or were handled slowly, creating unnecessary risk and stress. At times, it felt like I knew more about what was going on with my own property than the agent managing it. There was little evidence of active oversight or accountability, and problems were reacted to rather than properly managed. For the fees charged, I expected far better organisation, attention to detail, and landlord advocacy. I’ve since moved my property elsewhere and would not recommend this agency to other landlords looking for reliable property management. Stay well clear of this company! Sounds good at the start once they have your money they do not care!

I’m not usually one to leave any type of review. The last time I left a review was 2009 to inform Colchester united that there new stadium had no atmosphere and that they should have never moved from layer road! Anyway, this review will be a lot more positive! Buying a house can be extremely daunting and stressful, especially for a man who is now 60 years young. However, the younger gentlemen who has helped us find our dream property has been nothing but exceptional! This young man is named Jordan and all I can say is what an extraordinary lad! Not only did he help me and my wife Jaqueline find the property for us but he has restored our faith in the younger generations work ethic (our own son would rather travel to Thailand than do a honest days work). A very positive experience with William h Brown especially with Lisa Dove who oversaw the completion of the sale, which at times became a little problematical, although this was mainly due to poor communication from my recommended conveyancer. WHB-Culver St West, Colchester Having bought and sold several houses over the years, unfortunately this was by far the worst experience I’ve had with an agent. Two sales fell through-not the agents fault but still had to part ways after the second fell through. Positives: -Jack Hicks in mortgages is amazing to deal with. Knows his stuff and very efficient, making the mortgage application a smooth one. -Lisa Dove is a real asset and reassuring presence. Ultra professional, credible, trustworthy and feels like she is working in your best interests. These two individuals are the reason for the two stars in this review. Negatives: -I thought that the days of the stereotypical disingenuous, pushy, frustrating, incompetent estate agents were a thing of the past, however, WHB at Culver St West, Colchester have Anthony Cordeiro. Never felt like he was working in my best interests-doing the bare minimum to get what I needed then having the nerve to act like he was doing me a massive favour. Worst of all, he repeatedly tried to pressure me into breaking my chain unnecessarily—purely to push the sale through faster, regardless of the impact on me. Every interaction felt like a battle, I dreaded getting a call from him in the end and couldn’t bear the thought of having to deal with his nonsense for another 4+ months. There are plenty of other estate agents in Colchester but if you do/are using WHB in Colchester I strongly suggest that you ask for Lisa to progress your sale, her professionalism makes a significant difference. **UPDATE** Following this review I was contacted by Chloe Mcgarry, sales complaints handler who advised they’d be investigating any issues I had. Letter dated the 6th August stated I’d be contacted in 15 days or advised if that is extended-haven’t heard anything since. Also says in there complaint has been shared with the branch manager and area director-heard nothing from them either by way of addressing my issues. I guess they’re not bothered about the morales or ethics of their staff as long as the PnL looks good.

I was a first time buyer and didn't know about a lot of things. Jack dealt with a lot of patience and answered each and every question of mine. He made me understand things which was not his job to do. I always looked up to him for advice, sometimes not mortgage related but since he is an experienced professional he gave me some advice which really helped me. The onboarding process was seamless, we had a teams call where he made me understand everything including insurance. Got the application of interest from the bank within a few days, after I made an offer, i kept in touch with Jack. Best thing is - he replied back on the same day itself. Always clearing all doubts i had. I had a lot of problems with the solicitors and my overall completion was quite delayed but he helped me get on a much lower interest rate. Based on my experience this is an excellent and extremely efficient letting agent. This is my first property for letting from the initial surveying to signing the contract, everything was made so easy and straight forward by the Hannah and Emma. They were nice friendly, polite and easy to deal with, explained what i needed to do, never had any problems apart from minor confusion, any reports have been dealt with immediately.

Not very happy with the customer service we were promised - we viewed our new property and even the person who showed us around said it’s very poor needs a deep clean and attention to works. Hannah said works that needed doing in the property like wear and tear before we moved in and wasn’t all done it’s just a hassle to get done and now the contracts been signed they don’t care at all and just pass us to property management. They also put the tenancy date the same day we got the keys however it was gone 5pm in the evening even though we said we needed to move in the next day due to their times being so late and rushed everything and didn’t complete all the works and started the tenancy from that day. They said they wanted us to be happy in our new home. Jack and Emma have been brilliant and tried to help as much as they can. Wouldn’t recommend if trying to rent. We are starting to regret this a little but hopefully the issues get resolved.

Our experience with William H Brown at Colchester branch was very good. We walked in the office one Saturday day desperate because our favorite house was gone, and asked the staff to have a viewing on the same day but they said it is very difficult. After half an hour or so, we received a call from them telling us if we could attend to see one of our choices. We went there and we finally were so lucky and ended up taking one of the properties that Hannah McCreath showed us very kindly. I am putting in 4 stars because our experience is just starting and I don't know how the agency will continue during the tenancy, but I'm very happy so far.

I have just rent an apartment managed by William H Brown and I am really satisfied with all the support provided by Hannah and Emma during the whole renting and moving process. All the communication was clear and timely, with all the hiccups in the process being sorted out quickly and professionally. I am really thankful for all the effort they have put to ensure that I had an accommodation in time for my overseas move.

Having had a nightmare journey selling my property if it wasn’t for the team at William H Brown I would be in hospital with a breakdown!! The team went far and above what you would expect of an Estate Agency. Always patient, always doing their best to get the job done ! Even the members of staff who were not actively involved in my sale helped when I called in or phoned in always ensuring I got what was needed! As said , all the staff were brilliant but I have to pull out Lisa the progress agent who without her the whole thing would have collapsed, Rachel who stood in when Lisa was away , Owen who patiently suffered my constant viewings and questions ! As a business this team is outstanding and I cannot praise them high enough! The care and passion to get the job done is second to none! As a person who has written and taught customer care in my career I feel I have the knowledge to know this team is special. And no, I don’t work for them and I am not being paid by them. You want an outstanding Estate Agency you will not do better than this one. I thank you all most sincerely!!!

Having dealt with various other letting agents before and my experience always being just 'ok', I honestly wasn't setting my hopes up when I placed my property with William H Brown. How wrong I was. The staff there are so thorough and genuinely care about my property and my preferences. Emma and her team are always able to answer any queries I have and the communication is above and beyond any other service I've experienced elsewhere. I will always recommend William H Brown and specifically Emma's team to other people when looking to let their property.

UPDATED REVIEW: Originally, I had a great outlook on William H. Brown. However, I can’t help but believe this was a facade that has not lasted. The organisation has become unprofessional and, later, began treating me with negligence towards my requests. My original review: I’m a student who wanted to move into his flat instead of continuing to live in on-campus accommodation. I found a great property with William H. Brown, and to say the service was outstanding is the least. Emma, Katie and Hannah are three phenomenal ladies who made my first official move a pleasant experience. Responsive, caring and genuine - are three words to summarise the experience.

I cannot speak highly enough of the team at WHB at Culver Street. Emma and Hannah have both been absolutely first class from the start and all the way through the process, keeping me informed and working so hard to negotiate, what in my situation was less than a straightforward contractual situation. I would not hesitate to recommend them to landlord or tenant alike. As a Landlord I have dealt with my own tenancy previously; but quite frankly, seeing the professionalism of the team, what they deliver and the expertise they employ, I will return to the team at WHB without hesitation. I rang William H Brown Estate Agents in the hope of finding a property to rent in quite urgent circumstances and got through to Hannah, who I must say has been nothing short of magnificent. Hannah has genuinely been amazing! She was compassionate to my situation but remained professional. She went above and beyond as far as I am concerned - she's clearly a busy lady but always remained in contact with me and answered every mundane question I had for her. She was knowledgeable on the geography of the area I will be relocating to. Hannah is most certainly an asset to William H Brown and, I would 100% recommend William H Brown off the back of my experience.

Both Hannah and Emma have made renting a property from William h brown so easy for us . Had a few problems on my side but they were able to help solve them. Can’t thank them enough for all that they have done over the past few weeks . They have been in constant contact with me about emails that need to be looked at and things that needed to be electronically signed ( I’m no good at this email thing lol ) . Great communication from everyone, Emma, Hannah and Jack work as one team, they all responded quickly and clearly communicate with each other. Found a tenant within 4 days of listing, they answered all our questions quickly and talked us through the tenancy agreement and tenants reference findings. I have just begun the process of renting through william h brown and i have to say the care and speed with which Lucy handle our enquiry was exceptional she is truly a great asset to their team and is such a great pleasure to speak too and interact with. She went out of her way to pair us to the right property she looked at what we wanted and found a perfect place for us, she called us rather than emailing so was quickly told about a property and able to book a viewing the same day where upon seeing it we decided to take it.

I cannot recommend Phil and his team highly enough. From initial contact to completion we had nothing less than brilliant service. Our house sold quickly and the support we received from Jo whilst the move progressed was fantastic and very reassuring.
