Smart Home Expert

I am currently in a dispute with Smart Home Expert regarding a project that was cancelled before any design or installation work took place, and I feel it is important to share my experience so other consumers can make an informed decision. I was asked to pay a £750 deposit, representing a substantial proportion of the overall project cost. Before making the payment, I did not receive a contract or terms and conditions setting out the cancellation and deposit arrangements. I was therefore never been made aware that, according to their T&Cs, the deposit was non refundable. The project was immediately cancelled following the first meeting and Smart Home Expert refused to refund any part of the £750 payment, despite no design or physical installation work having taken place. I have, generously, I believe, offered them to keep a part of it to cover for their expenses. I have disputed this position and have now contacted Consumer Advice Scotland to seek independent advice regarding my rights, including whether the contractual terms were properly provided and incorporated before payment and whether retaining such a substantial amount is proportionate to the work actually carried out. My main concern is therefore not simply the amount of money involved, but the process: I believe consumers should be given clear contractual terms, including cancellation and deposit conditions, before being asked to make a substantial payment. I would strongly recommend that anyone considering using this company: obtains the full contract and terms and conditions before making any payment; checks exactly what the deposit covers; confirms in writing what happens to the deposit if the project is cancelled; and does not rely solely on verbal explanations. I am leaving this review while the matter is still being resolved because I believe other consumers should be aware of my experience. I will update the review if the matter is resolved.
