What affects the price?

  • System type — electric mats are cheaper to install per room but more expensive to run; wet (hydronic) systems are more expensive to install but cheaper to run and work with heat pumps
  • Floor construction — wet UFH in a concrete/screed floor is most efficient; installation under timber floors requires spreader plates and achieves lower heat output
  • Area coverage — economy of scale means whole-house installations cost significantly less per m² than single-room installations
  • Screed depth and type — standard sand/cement screed needs to be at least 65mm above the UFH pipe; liquid (anhydrite) screeds can be thinner (45mm) but cost more per m²

How long does it take?

An electric mat installation in a single bathroom takes 2–4 hours for the heating element itself (plus separate electrician time for connection). A wet UFH installation in a single room takes 1–2 days including pipework, manifold, and controls. A whole-house wet UFH installation takes 3–7 days of heating engineer time (excluding screed pour, which is a separate contractor). The screed must cure for 4–7 days before the system can be slowly brought up to temperature, and full warm-up takes a further 4–7 days — plan for 2–3 weeks before the system is at full performance.

Do I need one?

Underfloor heating provides several advantages over radiators: even heat distribution at floor level (no hot spots or cold corners), frees wall space for furniture, silent operation, and is more efficient when paired with a heat pump. It's most cost-effective to install during a renovation when floors are being replaced anyway. Retrofitting to existing rooms is possible but more disruptive (raising floor level with screed, or using spreader plates under timber floors). Wet UFH is the preferred heating system for new heat pump installations — heat pumps work at their most efficient with the low-flow temperatures that UFH requires.

How do you avoid overpaying?

  • Install wet UFH during a bathroom or kitchen renovation rather than as a standalone project — the disruption of opening up the floor is already accepted
  • For a single bathroom, an electric mat is cost-effective despite higher running costs — the small area means the energy premium is modest
  • Get multiple quotes for whole-house UFH — prices vary significantly between specialists
  • Consider a hybrid system: wet UFH on the ground floor (where it's easy to install during renovation), radiators upstairs — this is very common and provides excellent efficiency
  • If installing wet UFH during a new build, the cost per m² drops significantly compared to retrofit — raise it during planning if you're building or doing a major extension

How long does underfloor heating take to heat up?

Wet underfloor heating in a screed floor has more thermal mass and takes 1–2 hours to reach operating temperature from cold. It's best left running at a lower temperature continuously (or on a schedule) rather than turned on and off. Electric systems heat up much faster — typically 20–30 minutes. Both systems work well with programmable thermostats.
