Do I need one?
Gas fire installation must always be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer — it is a legal requirement under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. The work is also notifiable under Building Regulations (Part J). The engineer will issue a Gas Safe notification and provide you with a commissioning certificate. Can any gas engineer install a gas fire?
Any Gas Safe registered engineer with the HTR1 (domestic gas fires and heating appliances) qualification can install a gas fire. Verify the engineer holds this specific category, not just general gas registration.
Do I need a chimney to have a gas fire?
No. Balanced flue gas fires vent through the wall and don't require a chimney. Flueless gas fires require no flue at all but depend on good room ventilation. Open flue fires do require a chimney or suitable flue system.
Is gas fire installation covered by Building Regulations?
