Located right by Colchester station so handy for waiting for a train. Good food. Sports bar and friendly atmosphere.
PARKING - completed the machine inside the pub on arrival yet still received a ticket, have called the pub 3 times, called in once and emailed twice and still waiting on the manager calling me back - apparently if I can prove I was there, in the pub they can reverse the fine but we paid cash!!! Can you just reply to my email and at least communicate to me - decent pub but this parking issue is not good!!!
My local pub has always been a nice place to visit, especially when the sun is shining!
Busy football pub , good atmosphere and so much cheaper than London. If going to Colchester Utd make this your port of call.
Entered car park, read signs decided not to park yet was issued for a fine for being in the car park for exactly 2 mins and 36 seconds. Do not use this establishment. Deserves to go bust operating a racket.
Had a darts tournament with mates, pretty laid back vibes, nice and cozy. Service is generally good.
I went to the pub today my table is close to Pool table. Two rude people were having fun with no regard for the people sitting behind them. The stick almost hit me in the face. They didn't even apologize. We reported it to the pub and the lady at the bar didn't seem to care. Her answer was stupid. The pub is small and they still put the pool table so close to the drinking tables. The layout is stupid. I've never seen a pub that looks this bad. The food took over an hour to arrive. We will never go back. Just walking past is horrifying.
Popped in for a post match pint, Nice pub a short walk from Colchester train station.
Mediocre beer choices but not very good quality on the drinks, although the food was really nice.
My local for three years. Although I travel in to town for beers. I long for them to sell a more contemporary hazy pale. Get a Burnt Mill tap on or some cans in the fridge. Then mebbe I can come down and watch the footy.
This was the worst pub food I've ever had. It took 45 minutes to arrive and when it did.... disappointed doesn't cover it. I ordered a Margarita pizza. What arrived bore resemblance to any kind of pizza. No mozzarella or garlic or seasoning. Just some soapy tasteless cheddar melted on some poor quality doh. We didn't send it back as we had waited so long we needed to hit the road. My companions burger was barely edible but it did at least resemble a burger. Highly unrecommended.
Went with my local walking group, six of us in total, 3 cask ales on, all in good condition, doom bar and two from Colchester brewery, first time here but pub was very comfortable, staff polite, we had to wait for one of the barrels to be changed but there where no dramas, overall a lovely local pub tucked away off the main road near the train station.
Had a good pint here with a wide selection also does food a tidy smart place with a good atmosphere
Two very friendly bar staff so warm and welcoming. Great atmosphere. Will visit again for sure. Had the Chicken burger, it was beautiful. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Nice pub with seating and parking at the rear. Dog friendly, plenty of staff so virtually no waiting and nice people 🍺 It would be good if they updated their Facebook page more so we know when bands were on.
My experience is not good as a bar tender refused to provide a glass of warm/hot water which I wanted to mix with whisky instead of mixing cold water. Food which I ordered is good.
Stopped here for lunch before getting a train at the station nearby. Great service and nice food.
A nice enough pub but completely ruined for me by the treatment of the local Chinese restaurant and the fencing in of their property and breach of a VERY long established access. Both dangerous and unnecessary.
On different levels and steps no hand rail at side of steps on way to toilets.short on staff.friendly and obliging.
A great pub with a beer garden out back. There was a great live band on at the time and a cracking atmosphere
Friendly staff and pleasant surroundings also a reasonable size carpark. You have to register your vehicle inside. Didn't have any food at the time so can't comment on it.
Great boozer. Friendly staff and well stocked bar. Happy hour from 2pm until 5pm! What’s not to like!!! 😀
Good range of drinks, including non alchoholic, good food, prompt friendly service even when busy. Great for pre match drink too
Several different areas to enjoy food/drink, including a public bar. Basic menu. Reasonably priced. Good range of beer. I disliked the 2 TV screens on the wall. They need to be turned off when nobody is viewing.
Love going to this pub when I’m in the area, very clean, old traditional style looking pub, which I like in a pub. Simple but always well executed menu. Feels like a good “local’s” pub, but me and the wife have never felt uncomfortable. The last time I was in this pub, there was an issue with the app, I don’t normally use apps. I like to walk to the bar, be nosey, have a chat. But on this occasion the wife had, had a procedure at the local hospital so wanted me to stay with her. Anyway the staff noticed the issue before I’d even realised. I was charged 3 times. The two managers both approached me immediately, and explained the problem and dealt with it instantly. Totally satisfied with the outcome. Highly recommend this venue, and its food.
Go here before every Col Utd home game great staff great place my nephew Tre thinks there pizza better than Domino’s 👌🏻
The young waitress had us waiting for almost 10 minutes while collecting the plates from 3 tables. When she finally talked to us at 8.24pm she said that "We literally stopped serving food 5 minutes ago". She also added: "For future reference, the kitchen closes at 8.30pm"! Thanks dear, we are not coming back again.
Apparently barred 3 months ago, from a pub I've only ever been in to for a couple of social beers and food.. Apparently I was in the toilet for 2 hours and left my backpack there.. I havent owned a backpack since I was in school... I'm 32 years old.. attitude from barmaid and no chance of even talking my case... other than that I used to have a lovely time there with my partner and occasionally my sister
Wanted to thank Lee and his team in allowing us to hold a wage for our Dad on Tuesday. Food and service and the relaxed atmosphere the team provided was simply perfect and such a lovely tribute to Eric who had drank in this pub on many an occasion.. Thank you again Martin and Anita.
Somewhat dead vibes in this pub but it was the only one near the station. My ale was acceptable though had suspiciously colourful bubbles in the foam ( bit of cleaning liquid in pipes maybe ). If they improved the lighting and got rid of the 90s carpets it would be a nice pub
A great pub, has an outside place for drinking and food which are reasonably priced!
This is a really nice pub with a great atmosphere. There is a lovely outside area with a cover over it for when it rains and you can turn a heater on when it gets cold. There is a good selection of drinks and they now serve food. The staff are really nice too. The location is right next to the train station so it is good for commuters.
Great pub close to the station so great for commuters. Great prices and great atmosphere, especially on match days. 👍
Great place and lovely staff.good priced food and the wine is very reasonable price wise 😋 xx
Met to play darts on a Monday Good selection of beers pleasant staff well decorated
Reasonably priced and a short way from the station, top up as you're about to go home
Had a lovely time last night 23rd December great fun and live music thank you really needed it.❤️
Very nice pub. Don't forget to book your car into car park Stop serving food at 9.30
Nice place, tight parking and don't forget to register your car when you come in the door. Happy hour was an absolute bonus.
Only went in for one, but a cracking pub, decent locals, good selections of beers and a good beer garden. I would recommend it.
Unassuming from the front but lots of space (including outside) at the rear. Decent selection of drinks & snacks as well :)
A good ale pub, comfortable, with a friendly atmosphere. Within walking distance of Colchester North Station
Nice drinks nice environment and an enjoyable afternoon, big shout out to the barman who gave my friends son some crisps!!
The Bricklayers Arms is close by to Colchester train station and it served it's purpose for a quick pint before the train. I ordered a Guinness and it was poured basically in one in about 10 seconds and was very average to say the least. I would pop in again though if I was passing through as it had a pool table and is close to the station.
Buen sitio para disfrutar de una cerveza mas fría que el abrazo de una suegra 😁👌
Great atmosphere. Very friendly. Big beer garden at back and dogs allowed too. Good choice of beers. Highly recommend
Nice pub, good beer, nice staff, reasonable food. The only caveat is that it can get very noisy here particularly of a Friday evening exacerbated by two large TV screens directly adjacent to one another. If you like a lively well appointed pub conveniently situated close to Colchester main station the Bricklayers is ideal.
Convenient pub for station for football fans. Good selection of ales, friendly staff and punters. One of the few southern pubs I've been to where the staff pull the ale with a good head to it without having to ask.
Great local friendly pub and staff have yet to try the food certainly looks like a nice menus .
Visited this pub last week for a quick pit stop. We had a drink only. Service was quick & friendly. The pub was beautifully clean and tidy and the wooden tables gleamed. Was a lovely visit and will definitely be returning.
A good pub with a decent selection of beers. Handy for the railway station as well.
Great pub 5 minutes walk from the main station, served by a lovely lady called Molly, made to feel very welcome and a great pub atmosphere, good pool table too
Good selection of ales and a nice, but limited, menu. Burgers(patties) were very good. Avoid the tin seats though, they are cold and you slip on them.
Popped in after shopping trip in town and staff were super friendly and the pub had a great atmosphere. Will be stopping by again
Great, friendly pub which shows many different sports, choice of food also available. I would recommend a visit.
Really good night watching and much dancing to Stiff in the morning. Great atmosphere and friendly people just having a good time. Food looked very nice so will return to try it another time. 😁😁😁😁😎😎
Great selection of beers including staropramen on draft, food is very good for a pub also. Reasonably priced and always have the football on.
Food was incredible , generous portion sizes , would definitely order in again.
Went on Tuesday for the first time in a long while. Much improved menu (Burgers, wings and ribs) and great service by friendly bar staff.
Highly recommend, Food is amazing and the staff are brilliant, I will definitely be going here again
Came to the brick layers, had a drink and ordered some food. Service was quick and friendly and the food was amazing. I’ve been ordering since BWR started at the bus and they just keep getting better and better. Quality of the food is amazing and the presentation is amazing too! Can’t wait to come back!!
I had burgers wings & ribs in the bricklayers pub. Quick service and as always amazing food ! Defintley recommend.
5 star food, 5 star service by Frankie, delivered food to our table, top girl! 10/10 will come again
Absolutely banging food with great flavours 🤤🤤 I definitely had eyes bigger then my belly and them burgers omg delicious I will definitely be back for more What was even better being a lorry driver they delivered it to the truck so that’s 10/10 for me And top marks to the delivery lady food was still lovely and hot
We’ve ordered so many times from here and can’t ever fault the food! Obsessed with the loaded pulled pork chips and genuinely the best burgers. Love the fact they have opened more now so people from all around essex are able to try this amazing food.
BWR you guys are amazing. The food is nice and fresh, the service is amazing. You’ll never find anything like this around. Highly recommend
Unbelievable food, tastes amazing, perfect portion size , delivered on time and still piping hot! Will definitely be ordering again
Ordered a few times, love their food, loaded fries are the best I ever tried! A little bit pricey
Popular locals pub near Colchester mainline Station. Food served. Caution required if walking from the station exit, especially when busy with traffic!
Good for beer, a decent range but the food was average at best, with no vegetarian or vegan options.
Food was great, chicken tenders especially. Presented well and arrived in around 40mins, will use again
Lovely evening at the bricklayers arms, Jodie was very helpful and accommodating
Ciuldnt pay over counter plastic mugs and soon game was over came switched tele of how rude is that
Lovely food by Burgers, Wings and Ribs and very friendly staff. Nice big seating area outdoors, and indoors although the music is a bit loud sometimes in there. Nice side room if you want somewhere a bit quieter and less busy. Toilets are nice and clean. Not too sure prices on everything but I think a burger and chips is about £10-12 and I had a pink gin which was about £7. Would go again.
Lovely food, with vegetarian options very reasonably priced. Staff very welcoming and helpful, sunny beer graden at the rear
I have had dealings with this team on social media and i dont beleive in down treading a business online. We all make mistakes. They apologised for that mad weekend of delays amd ita not been poor ever since. Amazing food worth the wait and money.Fair play to them. Creating a great product and fantastic brand.
I went to the pub while still during certain lockdown restrictions, so there was only beer garden service. The staff was absolutely wonderful! QR codes were available on the tables for NHS track and trace. Had plenty of seating. My main issue was lack of outdoor heating. There was only one alcove that had a heater. The weather was not the best while I was there, with overcast and periods of showers (typical). Due to the cold breeze that would funnel its way through the gazebo, I only had a couple of pints and decided to seek warmth. I will return soon and try their menu.
I spent a couple of hours there today with a friend. The Covid arrangements were very good so I felt safe especially because it was quiet too. The Colchester Brewery No 1 and Jack Spitty were excellent pints.
Don't forget to pay for your parking. Car parking fee is required otherwise it's a £60 fine, rising to £100 if not paid within 14 days. Would help if they put up a reminder as you enter the pub.
Great pub. Good food, although the fish was a bit too well cooked. Good prices for both food and drinks and staff are really helpful. Also dog friendly! Would recommend this pub if you are in the area.
Great pub. Lots of respectful social distancing. Working well in the current weirdness
Great selection of drinks and food. Looks very nice in here with a small beer garden and undercover smoking area. Didn't eat this time but I definitely will next time.
Cosy little pub. Can watch sports on big TV screens. Separate eating area for about 10-12 tables. Free parking system you can register on. Friendly staff. Covered smoking area outside alongside beer garden.
Lot of local ales, bar staff nice....food ok. Good for sports, clientele a little meh
Thursday curry night is a must try, very authentic Indian, Cuisine I like the Madras and Jalfrezi , I’ve used many Indian restaurants, the bricklayers pub is up there with the traditional Indians in Colchester
Close to the station, good selection of beers and shows sports on large screen. Perfect pre match pub
I live in South Norfolk and met my daughter and partner from London there for Sunday lunch as a quick catchup. We picked it because it was so close to the station as although we drove, they came by train. The food was excellent - but reasonably priced - and staff very friendly and helpful. We must have stayed there for a little over 3 hours. We will certainly meet there again for a short get-together if we cannot manage a weekend at either home. I have seen an adverse comment about the parking but we stopped outside to let them know we had arrived and we were directed to ample car parking facilities at the rear - you just need to log your car registration into an iPad when you enter the pub from the back. Would definitely recommend.
Great pub! Really nice food and drink with friendly, hard working staff. Pool table and sports channels. 👍
Great and didn't question us asking to turn the sound down as autistic/hearing aids and can't tolerate loud noise.
Lovely atmosphere, made to feel welcome from the moment I walked in, great place.
Great atmosphere, sports TV and good beer. Food is lovely and very reasonable
Hadn't been in it for years. What a difference since last in. Shall pop in for quick pint again.
Decent pub with a nice beer garden, pool table, sports screens and a nice selection of beers
Decent boozer. Nice selection of ales. Good outdoor space. Nice interior layout. Sports on the telly. Close to the train station. Very convenient for a couple of pints before a train home.
Good pub, good range of beer. If driving be careful to check in on the tablet parking system or risk a fine.
Really good food, cooked very nicely, huge portions & very reasonably priced.
I've been to worse pubs for away games but this was very cramped. Looked ok when we walked in but it's not well designed at all. Beer is decent, service is good and the staff are friendly. Good amount of TV screens to watch sport and an above average pool table.
Good beer friendly service. Great to have all football on in both bars. Steak and ale pie was spot on!
Very friendly pub, great food and good beer. Lovely beer garden and TVs inside.
Decent pub, rude female staff. Been there twice, ordered food the second. Was made to feel bad for ordering fish & chips because the chef didn't like making it. Pretty sure thats your job pal. Given dirty looks from behind the bar, will not be visiting again. They need some serious customer service training.
Awesome Sunday roast. Don't forgot to put your car registration in the machine at the bar though!
Beware the car park as you need to sign your reg in & it may still be time limited? Lots of internal steps so not partucularly an accessible pub. Food is plentiful & reasonably priced.
Not great but ok. The service was rather hit and miss. No cutlery appeared until all food had been served. The food was served onto cold plates. No gravy until all dinners on the table, as there were ten of us this was several minutes. The parsnips and cauliflower cheese were lovely. The Brussels sprouts were barely identifiable....dessert was ordered but took so long to arrive that I forgot all about it! All in all we won't be eating here again.
Comfortable and good service. Visited with a large group. No problems and parking easy too.
The decor and interior were beautiful, a fantastic setting for some quiet board games with old football highlights on the televisions unobtrusively and very friendly and entertaining staff.
Just visited for first time and it seems very nice, friendly staff and it's mostly clean and tidy. Couple of things that lost the fifth star was the price of steak pie with a few peas and a bit of mash was in my opinion slightly too expensive for amount of food. Second issue was the table I sat at had quite a few peanuts on floor that hadn't been cleaned up which is a shame as it spoilt the overall impression.
Excellent beer and very reasonably priced beer. Anthony has got things running like clockwork. Reduced beer when the rugby is on, roll on the next test
Lost a lot of its character now its changed hands and had a refit. Food was expensive as well.
Went to the Bricklayers for lunch recently, I was going to give them a favorable review as requested by the young bar staff but stupidly parked in what used to be their car park! I have now received a Parking Charge for £100!! I phoned the Pub and was told it was nothing to do with them and there were signs up. ' I should have entered my details onto the iPad at the bar' was the answer in a very brusque tone. If the Car Park is nothing to do with them why do they have an iPad for details? Also the staff see people coming from the Car Park would it not be prudent to mention that there is an extortionate fine system in place and their number plate needs to be logged. I went up to the bar twice to order food and drink, not once was anything mentioned. Beware!!!!
Gone right down hill since the wicked witch of the West is the landlady shame
Friendly, good ale, good food and lovely people. 😀 It's the place you go after work for a quiet pint or on Fridays a not-so-quiet pint because it is very popular. Beer garden with benches - dogs allowed there but not inside. Refurbished Spring 2018 and changed hands but still good ales (including regular guest beers) and atmosphere. You can pay with debit card. One of our favourites.
Don't bother... Went for a drink with a friend in April and got stiffed for £100 'parking fine' from the pub's business-partner Civil Enforcement Ltd. The pub offered to get it cleared, but this didn't happen. Currently entering legal proceedings, since the pub didn't even have planning permission to start 'charging' for parking.
Lousy! Got stuck with a £100 'parking fine' in the pub car park when I went for a drink with a friend in April. Unbelievable. The pub offered to get it cancelled, but did not do so. So if you don't want to pay £100 for a drink, don't go there.
Very welcoming. Prices aren't bad. A good variety in food. Good job it's my local!
Quiet, not many people in there even though it was cooler weather, nice place though
Food, okay only. Bad service, we sat looking at our empty plates for at least 30 mins. There is an ashtray right outside the door which means the whole doorway and entrance smells of stale smoke. Wouldn't go back.
Great pub, good selection of beers & Ales and friendly staff 👍.. Also great atmosphere for he England games “ it’s coming home “ 🏴🏆
Amazing atmosphere while watching England romp to victory. Where's the air con / fans ?
Recommended to us so we went recently following a change of staff and a makeover. The old regime was a bit old school wood and real ale and catered for an older rugby orientated crowd. Still preferred that to this reincarnation. Estate type pub now. Caters for a younger crowd and food to reflect that. No problem with that but all felt a bit clique for us. Love it or hate it I guess. Cheers!
Although a small menu, the fish and chips was a massive portion and enjoyable with a decent price. I will be returning here again.
Great pub atmosphere, nice dining area, lots of parking. Brilliant all round pub!
The food was amazing and the service was great. Nice friendly staff. Will definitely come again.
Good seats, tasty food, friendly staff, nice beer options and live sport. Nook table if you have party of 4 or more to get table.
I met some friends here for lunch before we went to London. It was busy, but we found a table. The food is very good and was bought to the table in good time. I had the macaroni cheese and it was delicious. I will definitely eat here again.
Great pub to visit at the end of the working day. Impressive recent refurb and good atmosphere.
MENU SHARE FULL FLAVOUR EXPERIENCE GREATNESS AWAITS STEAK SUNDAY ROAST PIE&MASH BURGER APPLE CRUMBLE
Absolutely a fabulous customer service, if you find something not right in your food... you get a fresh new plate and the money back with no fuss!! I would recommend anyone to go there, it a great place to go for food or just a drink.
Under new management and refurbished. Smart, modern feel to the place, with that vintage kind of pub vibe. Still has a good selection of lagers and real ales. Staff have been friendly and inviting, as they always were. Serves food now throughout the day. Just tucked into salt and pepper squid and a bacon burger myself and was really pleased I did. Limited menu, but that should help keep it simple and good. As a commuter and a local I'm really pleased that I can now have a pub meal on the way home, along with a decent pint (or two). Still manages to keep that pub feeling even with serving food. Still a drinkers pub at its heart. Looking forward to my next visit.
It's changed hands recently - the range of beers is good. The food menu is not very varied and is average.
We enjoyed the beer and food here: the menu is by-the-numbers pub grub, but it really was a cut above the norm. The special was good value, the chips were worthy of mention (they tasted of potato!) and the beer was pretty well kept. Excellent pub grub, served well. What made this pub worth the extra star was the service and welcome. You felt at home instantly (and the staff did us a really big favour in response to a cheeky request that I won't describe here in case they get inundated with similar)! We had an onward journey so couldn't stay but I would have gladly whiled away an afternoon here. Our first visit to Colchester and this was a real find. Recommended.
Newly refurbished and I believe under new owners. Sell food which I'm yet to try. Good beer. Worth a visit.
Played darts here tonight and Colchester United at home the barmaid Daniel was amazing working on her own
The refurb looks good, shame about the ladies toilet. No sanitary waste bins and the partitions weren't replaced, so look old and out of place with the rest of the toilet refurb.
Just being refurbished... Reopens on the 26th of jan.. Looks like being 5 stars when they reopen
Pubs closed for a month I was told yesterday when I went for a pint. Rumour has it it’s now owned by the group who own the George hotel. Is that true.
Have been visiting this pub for the last few months and it really is a breath of fresh air compared to so many pubs in Colchester. The atmosphere is excellent A real relaxed and enjoy and socialise which after all what a pub is supposed to be. Having spoken to a number of regulars in there it certainly wast this good under the previous management. The staff are friendly and efficient and for the first time we were greeted with a smile. It is a real sham that the existing managers are only temporary as the are a real asset to the pub and community . I have never seen this pub so busy since the holding tenants were put in place. What is the brewery thinking!!!!!!!!!!!
Was always a great pub under Fred and Hazel. Now they have moved on it really needs a permanent tenant to bring it back to its best.
Very Mom and Pop feel about this place. Massive portions of food for Sunday roast at a good price, and a solid selection of drinks. Toilets can be a bit ropey at times, but the overall atmosphere is great.
A friendly, very traditional, local Adnams pub. Been run by the same family for decades. Very convenient for Colchester station. Good selection of ales and lagers. Nice conservatory and lounge bar at the back, traditional public bar at the front. Only drawback is it closes in the afternoon from Mon to Thurs.
Cozy relaxed old skool pub vibe, traditional layout and decor, nice outside beer garden
One of the best pubs in Colchester. Great real ale. Solid Sunday roast. Good service
Brilliant selection of alcohol and helpful staff, love the choice of seating areas.
Nice traditional pub, good selection of beer and cider, friendly staff, pool table and dart board
Nice choice of beers in a nice environment. One of the better pubs around colchester
Good selection of ales, good atmosphere. Usually quite busy but that's because it's a good place to be.
Best pub in Colchester? Is a close run thing but Bricklayers takes it for me. No food in the evening, but great beer and friendly staff.
Loads of real ales and great pub grub at lunchtimes with a fantastic Sunday roast! That's more than enough for a lot of people! Get down there!
The Best Sunday Roast Beef in Town. Great Landlord. Just Awesome Place to meet your Friends
Great selection of local and guest brews, and makes great pub sandwiches too, in a traditional no nonsense pub environment. Great parking too.
Proper pub atmosphere and good selection of real ales from Adnams and guest brewers.
If you thought all real pubs died out 30 years ago, call in to The Bricklayers and prepare to be amazed. Excellent range of well-kept beers, nice choice of lunch time food, friendly, efficient bar staff, no poncey "themed" decor, just a beautifully clean and tidy proper pub. Lots of space too, with various rooms and spaces, plus a large beer garden. Pop in once and you'll be a regular!
A super local pub with great ales. A true community pub with friendly locals and great landlords.
Quite big so there's always room, but still cosy since it's all split up into different sections. Like getting several pubs in one :) Nice selection of ale, pool table, friendly place.
