Electrical faults are one of the leading causes of house fires in the UK, responsible for around 20,000 fires per year according to government data. Many start silently: a deteriorating cable connection, a loose termination, or insulation worn down to bare copper. And give no obvious warning until a fault develops into a fire. Yet there are reliable warning signs if you know what to look for. This guide covers ten of the most important signals that your home's electrical system needs professional attention, from the obvious and urgent to the subtle but significant.

1. Circuit Breakers That Trip Frequently

A circuit breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job: it's protecting your circuit from overcurrent. But a breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit, or trips as soon as you reset it, is telling you something needs investigation. The two main causes are overloading and a genuine fault. Overloading is the more benign cause: too many high-draw appliances on a single circuit, common in kitchens where a kettle, toaster, microwave, and coffee machine share one ring main, exceed the breaker's rating and it cuts out. The fix may be as simple as redistributing appliance use or having a dedicated circuit installed for a high-draw appliance. A fault: such as a short circuit caused by damaged wiring, a failing appliance, or a loose connection. Is more serious and requires a qualified electrician to trace and resolve. An RCD that trips, rather than an MCB, suggests a current leakage to earth, potentially through damaged wiring or a failing appliance, and should always be investigated rather than simply reset and ignored.

2. Flickering or Dimming Lights

A single light flickering is usually a failing bulb, a loose bulb fitting, or an incompatible dimmer switch used with an LED bulb: straightforward to resolve without an electrician. The more concerning scenario is lights flickering across multiple circuits, flickering that worsens when you use appliances, or a flickering that comes and goes regardless of bulb replacement. Widespread or persistent flickering suggests a loose connection at the consumer unit, a failing main neutral connection, or a loose terminal somewhere in the circuit that is arcing intermittently. An arcing connection generates intense localised heat and is a fire risk: it's one of the causes of electrical fires that start in wall cavities. If lights throughout your home flicker when a large appliance starts up, that can indicate a voltage drop caused by inadequate wiring or a loose incoming supply connection. Your distribution network operator (DNO) should be involved alongside an electrician.

3. Burning Smell from Sockets or Switches: Act Immediately

A burning smell from an electrical socket, switch, or fuse board is a Category 1 electrical emergency. Do not ignore it or put it down to a 'hot electrical smell' from a new appliance. A burning or plasticky smell from electrical fittings indicates wiring insulation melting, a connection that is arcing, or a component overheating. All of which are direct fire hazards. If you detect a burning smell from a specific socket or switch: unplug anything connected to it, switch it off at the wall, and do not use it. If the smell is coming from the consumer unit (fuse board), turn off all circuits at the main switch and call a qualified electrician immediately. 4. Discoloured or Warm Sockets and Switches

Sockets and switches should be room temperature. If a socket faceplate feels warm, or hot, to the touch, or if you notice brown or black discolouration around a socket or switch, those are warning signs of a connection that is running too hot. This can result from a loose terminal inside the socket (which creates resistance and heat), a damaged socket that has been mechanically stressed, or a socket that has been overloaded regularly. Discolouration is particularly telling: a brown or sooty mark around a socket outlet indicates arcing has occurred. Arcing produces localised temperatures that can exceed 4,000°C and instantly ignite surrounding materials. An electrician will replace the affected socket and inspect the wiring behind it for damage.

5. Sparking When You Plug In an Appliance

A small, brief spark when plugging in an appliance can be normal: it's caused by the sudden inrush of current as the circuit closes. However, large sparks, sparks accompanied by a popping sound, sparks that leave a visible mark on the plug pins or socket face, or sparks that happen every time you plug in should not be dismissed. Persistent sparking usually indicates a worn socket where the internal contacts have degraded and are no longer making solid contact with plug pins. This creates intermittent arcing and generates heat. It can also indicate a wiring fault behind the socket. Worn sockets are a common issue in older UK homes, particularly those where heavy-use sockets have never been replaced.

6. Buzzing Sounds from the Consumer Unit or Sockets

Electrical systems should be silent. A buzzing, humming, or crackling sound from a consumer unit (fuse board), socket outlet, or light switch is abnormal and warrants prompt investigation. At the consumer unit, buzzing often indicates a loose connection, a failing MCB or RCD, or, in older homes, an overloaded or deteriorating fuse board. A loose main incoming cable connection can buzz loudly and is serious. Buzzing from a specific socket or light switch usually indicates arcing inside the fitting. The current is jumping a gap rather than flowing through solid metal. A low-level buzz from a dimmer switch is sometimes acceptable with certain bulb types, but a loud or increasing buzz, or buzzing in a standard switch, is a fault. An electrician will investigate with a non-contact voltage tester and open the fitting to inspect terminals and wiring. Never open a consumer unit or live socket yourself.

7. Circuit Breakers That Won't Reset

If a circuit breaker trips and then will not reset, either it springs back immediately or won't latch in the 'on' position, that is the protection system telling you there is still an active fault on the circuit. Repeatedly attempting to reset it will not fix the underlying problem and risks damaging the breaker itself. Common causes include a short circuit caused by damaged cable insulation, a ground fault in an appliance still connected to the circuit, a failed appliance motor drawing excessive current, or a wiring fault inside a fitting. The correct approach is to turn off and unplug all appliances on the affected circuit, then attempt a single reset. If it holds, reconnect appliances one at a time to identify the faulty appliance. 8. Your EICR Date Has Passed

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a thorough assessment of your home's fixed wiring, consumer unit, earthing, and bonding carried out by a qualified electrician. It assigns observations as C1 (danger present), C2 (potentially dangerous), or C3 (recommendation for improvement). In England, landlords have been legally required since April 2021 to provide an EICR to tenants and to rectify any C1 or C2 faults within 28 days of the report date. For homeowners, the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) recommend a periodic inspection every 10 years for owner-occupied domestic properties. If you are moving into a property with no EICR history, buying or selling, or the property is more than 25 years old with no inspection record, an EICR is a sensible investment: typically £150–£300 for a standard three-bedroom house.

9. Signs Your Wiring May Need Replacing

Older wiring in UK homes can be a significant safety concern. Properties built before the 1960s often contain rubber-insulated cables; rubber insulation hardens and cracks over time and can fail catastrophically. Key visual indicators that your wiring may be dangerously outdated: round-pin sockets (pre-1947 design), a fuse board with wooden back and ceramic fuse carriers, fabric-sheathed cabling visible in the loft or under floors, and no RCD protection in the consumer unit. The absence of RCD protection is particularly significant. RCDs protect against electrocution by cutting power within milliseconds if they detect current leaking to earth. 10. You're Planning a Renovation or New Electrical Work

Work that must be notified to your local building control authority (or carried out by a Part P registered electrician who self-certifies) includes: installing new circuits, extending an existing circuit in a kitchen, bathroom, or outdoors, replacing a consumer unit, and certain other specified work.
